GH4 Ninja Flame + GH4 4K recording trouble...

Hey all,

I recently got the Ninja Flame to compliment my GH4. Problem is, when I switch the camera to output 10 bit over HDMI, and then switch the camera into 4K mode, the screen on the Ninja flickers, going between normal and "no input". The "no input" error made me think it was the HDMI cable, but then when I switch the camera into 1080 mode, it's perfectly fine. No input errors. Thus, it only happens in 4K mode (not DCI, but 3840x2160). I am running firmware version 2.3 on the camera, if that matters.

Here's a short video of it happening:

Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? Was there a firmware update that fixed this that I'm not aware of?

It could still be the HDMI cable if it's not rated for high-speed. I'd try another one, rated for 4k (1.4), just to be sure.

It gives no specs on what the cable is rated for. Didn't find the info on their website either. You have to be positive the cable supports HDMI 1.4 or higher.

The HDMI 1.4 spec was from all the way back in 2009. I would assume a cable sold in 2016 would surely be up to this spec?

And @DLD, I tried setting it back to 8 bit, but no dice.

I opened a support ticket over at Atomos, so we'll see what happens.

That doesn't mean anything at all. New modern HDMI cables are sold all the time that only support HD. It is not a given that 4k capable HDMI cables automatically replace HD capable HDMI cables. They are different requirements and since most people don't need 4k support many modern HDMI cables still do not support 4k.

When I buy a new HDMI cable or adapter I make sure I read reviews to make sure another physical person has used it for 4k.

HDMI is a real picky son-of-a-gun and is something you don't want to fart around with. This is no longer the analog days when pretty much anything with a wire and connector could pass a signal from one device to the other. Heck I used to use RCA audio cables as component video cables. You could do stuff like that back then. Not anymore. You need to get a HDMI cable that not only clearly states it works for 4k but also has reviews of people who have actually used it for 4k.

I have a new cable on the way that is rated for the 1.4 spec. Should be here Monday.

I'll post an update when it gets here.
