Nikon's big announcement.

Nikon's big announcement in Feb 09. Anyone care to speculate what the hell it might be? A cine video camera that beats Red One for $5,000 might be big.

no one knows, just rumors

what's interesing is that in 1959 nikon released their F series slr which is now a classic.
so 50 years in 2009 could bring either an anniversary party, a collector's edition camera or something else "big"

2008 is the 75th anniversary for the nikkor line of lenses and the 90th for nikon. 2008 is also a good chance for something other than d60, d90 and d700.

we'll just have to wait.

"Nikon "little RED" flash based Camcorder in 2009?
Just been to IBC. Bumbled in a person that I know with tight Nikon connections. He mentioned that Nikon has plans to do a flashbased videocamera in Red One-style with mount for Nikon lenses.

Price point <4.000 USD. The front end - optics and sensor will be Nikon, but the rest of the electronics will be designed by a well known japanese videomanufacturer.

Announcement NAB 09 - delivery late 09.

The idea is to erase Canons Pro video division.

DISCLAIMER: I have no idea about the validity of this. The source is usually reliable, but he is a still photographer."

imagine!!

Edit: Below image is a photoshop mockup

I don't believe this for a second. HOWEVER... that would be way too sweet. LoL

I don't know. It makes sense. A little preview with the D90 (with crippled features) and then a full fledged video camcorder a year later.

I think this solidifies my decision to go with the 5D MKII. I'm a photographer first and the MKII will give me a professional level DSLR with the video capability to do the web based video product I need right now, and I won't be regretting the MKII purchase when and if this or any other progressive products arrive in 09. It looks like 09 is going to be a major stepping stone for indies to step up next to the big boys in production capability. It's an exciting time to be an image maker.

i'd be happy with an AVCHD 1080p24p dedicated camera. that would rock.... and a 72060p slomo option....

A Nikon Video body capable of 1080 24p - 120p+ would be ideal.

Same lens compatibility as the D3 with a large capacity battery option and a more video friendly form factor.

$ < $4k USD

That would be the one.

Sounds sweet  So get on your marks Nikon! Sombody has to do the work..

It makes a little sense. You know how rumors are, I remember how the D90 was rumored to have 4k or so video.... I knew that wouldn't happen. But it makes a little sense.

It would be an excellent tool for photo journalists. Newpapers are increasingly wanting video, and if the camera takes both good stills and good video, it would be a sort of "force multiplier" for newspapers. Even before the D90 rumors I had read a couple stories about the future merger of still and motion photography. If Nikon feels that's likely they might decide to jump on it. They have no video line to cannibalize, as has been pointed out about 100 times by others.

Also, the word BIG, over and over?? Its not going to be just another full frame sensor D-SLR. A rangefinder? If so, how is that "BIG". Medium formant... maybe, anything is possible, but I really don't see that unless they'd secretly bought up a failing MF company (Contax from Kyocera?)

I think a video camera taking F mount lenses would be really BIG. And it would then make sense why they put video into the D90 and left it rather crippled... Its not catering to soccer moms, its whetting our appetites.

As cool as the idea of a Nikon video camera might be (and I'm not saying it's not going to happen)
I seriously doubt that's what this announcement is referring to.

Just ask yourself - if Nikon were to unveil a video camera in hopes of truly competing in the video market -
why on earth would they make the announcement at a Wedding & Portrait Photographers International event?

It makes no sense.
They would unveil something like that at NAB or IBC... or some other video related event.

My guess is this is going to be the 'official' announcement of the rumored D3X, which should be a 24 MP camera
(hence the 'BIG' references)

It has been happening for a while now. Rumors begin, then sneak shots of the products start showing up with a disclaimer then rumors become a reality. The only one that shows prototypes and publish specs way in advance is RED.
As for showing a professional camera at a wedding & portrait photographers huge event it wouldn't surprise me. These are top notch image makers who comprise a multi million dollar industry first of all. Second, a lot of event videographers are moving to HD video cameras as their clients move to HDTV sets as well as BlueRay players. Third, Nikon would make news way in advance than its competitors at NAB would. By the time NAB came around the guys that don't go to the wedding event would be already looking to check ouy the new Nikon camera at NAB.
About the camera picture, that is exactly the way I envisioned the first Nikon video camera to look like. Amazing if it is. And you know this guys are going to throw all their weight to make it competitive.

that image looks soo fake

as for the weddings event i don't remember nikon ever releasing something at that party.
it's small compared to nab or photokina. the location is strange so that makes me curious

the most recent rumors say that photokina 2008 will bring new prime lenses. they will be announced tomorrow. so check the news, we'll see if it's true or not.

the 14-24 and the new PC lenses they all are way above D3's resolution. some older are better than D3's too.
so all this would make room for a great 20+ mp camera.
