Nikon's big announcement.

When the first D90 photographs started appearing they also "looked so fake". People kept saying that the camera wasn't happenning. No video on a DSLR. They were very disapointed when the photos indeed were real. Thats how the human brain works many times.

yeah but this one really looks fake
the nikon logo is on every possible side with different fonts and the lens is with the markings on the side, not on the top like the F mount is. it's just a photo of a lens with nano coating found on the web. the guy didn't know the distance reading is on the top.

I remember reading the Nikon rumors forums and looking at possible D90 early pics and those were the exact same words people were saying. Practically word for word. And we all know what happened next.

do you have a nikon at home? try to mount the lens on the side
it'll be cool to use too. you can't see the focus distance and the focus/vr switches will be hard to reach. other than that pretty cool picture.

Sorry to burst your dream bubble guys but this is faker than the fakest.

It's somehow photoshoped.
Here where the design came from:

I'm sure Nikon has something up their sleeve in terms of video but they are still in the
experimental process.. They are not ready to take on the world just yet. Maybe
in 2 years or so when the can finish some serious R&D and know more about their
competition.

I'm Sad Too........

Yes it's fake, i photoshoped it my self just to give an idea of what could be on the way,
sorry about the confusion, i presumed it was an obvious mock up.

No Problem Brian,
Everybody dreams BIG....

I am sure Nikon is focused on Improvements right now
But would I love to be Shocked by some radical ProVideo Cam to shake up the competitors.

D90 is an awsome Stepping Stone.
I have already planned on having three D90 cams to shoot a movie.

I thought it all looked fake too. Like a pale rip-off of a Red announcemnt. It's almost like a parody of one of Jim Jannard's press releases: "It's so big we can't tell you what it is!"

And the photo of the rig looked fake to me too.

But I suppose the truth is, even if it's fake, it's probably gonna be real eventually. It's a direction that Nikon will start heading, probably, and there will be amazing high-res, pro quality, digital video cameras for the price of today's D90. Maybe it will take 5 years though?

Progress is going to come fast and furious at this point. I doubt we are more than a coup[le of years away from a DSLR type camera dedicated to video. In many ways, DSLRS have just broke the sound barrier and put a crack in the glass ceiling that previously separated the big production companies form the indie. The playing field just started becoming a whole lot fairer in the last couple of weeks.

In the future, people will be able to recall where they were when Kennedy was assassinated, where they were when the trade towers fell, and where they were when the D90 was released. :-)

the poster is for real.. just nobody knows what it will be.. although most speculation is about a medium format camera.

It's real? Well that's interesting. I mean, their "this is big and we can't tell you what it is" will be the marketing slogan of 2008...and we'll be making fun of it next year. It just sounds so silly now after hearing it from Red over and over. But I have a short attention span, so maybe it still works for everyone else.

I'm sorry my sarcasm meter is broken, this is suppose to have been originally published in an ad in Rangefinder magazine (page 148), and is now on the official WPPI website. The ad itself is real and has been floating around for awhile.

Its probably the rumored MX-format Nikon; a live-view medium-format camera that is suppose to be similar to a Mamiya 7 (no reflex-mirrors, OVF, etc.); rumors suggest it uses a CMOS sensor instead of a CCD that every other medium-format camera uses. No suggestion it does video.

Also, I'm sure we will see a Red One rival at a lower-price range sooner or later- if not from Nikon, maybe from Canon, Sony, or Panasonic. The technology is obviously here, but perhaps not in the packaging or form-factor.

I think the whole BIG thing is their 20+ MP camera and if they sold a camera for $4,000 it wouldn't look like an Arri... it would look more like an HVX...

Bologna

I think the sensor is FX sized and its a small body, like the D40, but without a mirror. It will only view via LiveView, which is already better on my D90 than the viewfinder. Note the lack of any motor screw, and the lack of the aperture opening lever. Plus a 50mm af-s was just released, makes sense with this config...

Wonder if it will do video. Actually I wonder if the video it will do will be any better than the D90... I think most any new Nikon or Canon will probably do video.

Ok, Nikon has never made a medium format camera in 50+ years they have been around. Why would they suddenly start now in the digital age? I don't know about most of you, but digital medium format images don't look any different to me then 35mm sized digital camera images.

This announcement has to be about something different. Personally I'm hoping for a video camera line like many of you. That would be a BIG announcement and would make the most sense considering Nikon released the D90 with video recently and has a history of making super 8 movie cameras decades ago.
