That's a beautiful shot.

I think we're witnessing an evolution in Alveraz... he's quickly moving from "great photographer" to "incredible photographer".

This picture at the top of the page made me catch up on the thread... and I just can't believe how many incredible shots there are from so many people... but Alveraz's shots are getting transcendental in the last few pages.

Thanks, Matt but I hardly deserve such accolades. I'm brand new to this and far from getting this down. I've seen what everyone does around here and I have much work to do to catch up with these guys. I'm inspired by you all, keep up the good work. Jeez, look at the work by Theodoros above me, now that's amazing!

Honestly I had given up on thinking it was ever going to happen. Sounds like an incredible piece of gear. If I was still doing photography as a primary profession, I'd be on the waiting list already.

Alveraz, your stuff is looking good. It's really all about colors, depth, and lighting, which you are definitely utilizing in your client work.

I just picked up the 50mm 1.8 for my D80 as well, I love it! What f-stop do you try to shoot around with the 50, as I've noticed actually shooting at 1.8 is so shallow, not even the whole face is in focus! My depth is literally no more than 5 inches at that aperture.

Example:

The focus on the hair goes out right about his temple...That's tiny!

Hey Andrew,

I do play with 1.8 on occasion but only when I'm using my tripod or monopod. It's tough, I agree. But depending on your background you can get some great results in there. A very slight unsharp mask in NX will zap the little bit of blur, but that's my amateur assessment.

I would also consider cooling off that white balance with the incandescent setting. Is it a RAW image? NX has those balance controls for NEF files. I'm assuming this was shot with tungsten? If it's natural light maybe you were shooting with the cloudy WB setting?

I usually hang out in the 3-4 range by the way. It totally depends on my background. The more I find it can supplement or add to the image I may go smaller. But for the most part we need larger f stops simply to keep the agent or CD focused on the subject, not the BG.

Good luck!

I think the tiny focus is no problem if you put it on the eyes. When the eyes are sharp the rest doesn´t really matter, don´t you think?

i was sitting in my room yesterday admiring my tripod and decided to get a few shots:

legs

head

and then yoda caught my eye:

Andrew,
I try to shoot somewhere around 2.8. I have seen test done on these lenses and it doesnt perform as well around the 1.8 area. Well it performs well, but the picture is not as sharp. I think you get the best performance between 2.8 and 14. Nice pic of sean though. Did you shoot that green screen!

Yeah, Alveraz, I was just using that photo as an example of focus, I didnt mess with the image before posting, even though I normally would decrease that orange hue ALOT.

I'm finding that the 3-4 area of the 50mm seems to be its sweet spot.

Whoah! Didnt catch that comment, happened right as I was posting. So yeah, I pretty much just said that in my post!

For that picture of Sean, its shot against a cherry backdrop, aka my freshly painted wall, natural light. I am gonna go out tonight or tomorrow and shoot some more on my 50mm around the 2.8-4 range.
