Nikon User Thread

man you guys have won me over I'm getting a Nikon. I was this close to going for a Canon xti, I'm not sure what should I go for though D80, or D40 and what lenses should I buy any recomendations or links because I'm so siked to buy one now you guys took some great pics.

Hi pest22o,

If you think you want it now, wait till you sign up at the nikonians.org forum. I would start there for research and ample help on various models. You will find tons of reviews on each, and all the Nikon products. I'm there every day, asking questions, learning from the pro's and sharing images.

Good luck!

Oh, and my personal opinion is D80 for sure. I'm biased though, it's what I use. I found it professional enough to advance into and easy enough to begin with. As far as lens it really depends what you want to do. One D80 kit comes with the 18-135 lens which is a fine walk around lens.

I would pick up a 50mm 1.8 (affordable) for portrait work and maybe a 70-300 (affordable) telefocus for range. Again, it depends what you want out of your lens. If you have the dough everyone seems to snatch the 70-200VR.

I'm still a newbie though, there's plenty of others around here that can give you more detailed info.

Good luck!

Do not get the D40 if you have large hands, it will not 'fit' well in my opinion. If however you want a camera that works really well for location scouting and just all around fun, get the D40.

The D70 I believe is discontinued, so then get the D80 for more bells and whistles. If you have money to spend, then get the D200.

D40 w/ basic lens - $532 Amazon (free ship)
D80 w/18-135mm lens - $1155 Amazon (free ship)
D200 w/18-135mm lens - $1750 Amazon

If you want an all purpose lens and have a little money to spend:
Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens - $756 Amazon

D80 for 155 I think you typod that wrong? and a 756$ lens wow I wish. and is the D100 any better then the D80? and thanks again for the help you have no idea how helpfull u guys are.

The D80 is basically the D50 body with quite a few elements from the D200 thrown in. I would not buy the D200 when you can buy the D80 and get just about everything the D200 does outside of 5 shots per second opposed to 3 with the D80. I'm speaking from a frugal shopping perspective. if you can afford the D200, sure get that, why not.

Like I said, do your research at nikonians.org, all the answers are there. I wouldn't rely on one forum.

Here is the best link around to answer your questions for each model:

Over to the right you will find an extensive review of each model.

There is more difference between the D200 and D80 other than just the FPS.

Pros for the D200:
*metal weather sealed body rather than plastic
*takes CF cards
*will meter with MF lenses (AI/AIS)
*ISO in viewfinder
*Direct controls (no menus) for WB, ISO, BKT, Metering

Are these worth the extra money? Depends on your shooting style and needs.

The image out of the D80 seems to have more sharpening applied inside the camera but there are also some exposure issues with the D80. That being said, the D200 has banding with light sources...

Exposure can be corrected by shooting RAW, there is nothing you can do to correct banding... the image is just dead.

For the shooting I do, I use a couple of D200's and they work great for me.

If the added features of the D200 aren't important for you then save the money and spend it on glass.

---------------------------

I had no problems with my hands, which are pretty large, with the D40... I actually like the small frame of the camera.

Not everyone needs or should have an SLR. My girlfriend and I just got back from Baltimore and I picked up a little Panasonic P&S camera and the images out of that 7MP camera are great. It has a 7x optical zoom and it performed perfectly.

If you are looking at something like a D200 or D80 or D50 with just something like the 18-200 you can get a P&S that will give you the same quality at 25% the cost.

I'm just saying...

Take a look at where the field of focus is...it says depth...that was an accident!

Giz, that dof shot was friggin amazing. Was that intentional? Hey RCB, I agree, that shot is ridiculously amazing. I drop in every once and a while just to check that shot out.

Anyway, I had my second corporate gig today and made some adjustments from that last one I shared. I think this one is better, but I'm still not satisfied. I realize I need a dedicated light for the suit. The butterfly lighting only covered the face. Live and learn. I need to figure out how to keep the BG the same too. I plan to re-shoot this company free of charge as I'm not satisfied.

Here's two images of the group that I feel needed the most improvement. Any suggestions are welcome...

Alv,
Yeah...that was totally an accident. I looked at the picture after I posted an was like holy poo...that is awesome...it is a beautiful accident! Like the stuff the way it is. Good Luck!

Crazy. I have the same lens and it looks like low light. Keeping that focus at that setting is really good and inspiring. I get down to 1/60 and can't get that sharp without my tripod. Especially with that f1.8, on stage none the less.

Well, then you are not satisfied with the framing or what?

I would prefer the landscape format actually...

I stated what I'd like to change next time. Landscape for corporate headshots? I don't think so. Maybe that's just me. Thanks!

Can anyone help me? I wanted to know how you guys post an image online without losing resolution or contrast? I tried psting some of my pictures on facebook but they keep coming out too dark or too pixelated? I know I have to go to save for web posting but then what?
