Couple shots I grabbed tonight from my back porch. D80 with the 18-200 VR.

That 18-200 is a great lens, nice work. I was going to buy that lens but went with the 85mm 1.4 instead. But once I start traveling I'm getting that one!

Very nice, crisp shots.

I really like the strobist look you have going.

How did you get the background so blue? Gel the flashes and tungsten WB?

Thanks. It was raining out, the blue was easy to capture in my alley, no gels. I did pump the color up a little in NX, but barely. She's lit with one SB-600 off camera left, that's it. My kid is holding a bounce on the right.

The more I look at this photo the more I like it. And I'm impressed you are able to get that much fill with a bounce. I just knew for sure you had dialed down a second flash. Really nice work, not that I expect anything less from you.

Woah, these are magical. The first one in particular grabbed my attention.

How do you find the 18-200 VR? I just got a d80 18-135 but I find I really need the extra length (insert joke). I don't want to spend the money but I could probably get $300 or so for the 18-135 so that'll make it a little less painful.

Hi guys,

I've been following this thread from sometime and some of the pictures here lead me to finally buying a D40. I have to say I have been amazed by some of the talent I've seen here. There's some very inspiring work and I truly hope that soon I can also inspire new people to jump into the exciting world of photography.
I have a set of nice lenses (50mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8, 28mm f2.8, 24-70mm f2.8) that I have been using with my 35mm adapter and my XH-A1...that is my only experience. So, I was wondering about tips and advices on that you guys may have for a new comer (regarding the d40, taking pictures, color correcting, and everything else you may find relevant...other than the obvious factors that are talent and inspiration)...I know that many of these points can be relative, ambiguous, subjective, but for a new starter like me everything is gold.

Many thanks and keep up the good work

Rafa

Thanks man, the U-Point technology system in Capture NX does wonders for light. Sometimes I use it to pick up the face light a little, as I did here. But these days I use it less and less. You should test run it sometime, it kicks arse.

Hey Rafa,

For most newbies I tell them to read as much as possible on www.kenrockwell.com. Ken loves the D40 and has a lot of good info. I will also say that you should remember that his site is only one mans opinion. His site never mentions that the fix length lenses you have will even work on your D40. There is a group on Flickr that only does manual metering that might be a big help if you are new to the camera. I use a D40 as well, and while I'm not new to photog I am new to this body. That said feel free to drop a line if you have any questions and I'll do the best I can to help ya out.

Dan

Many many thanks, guys. The websites you've posted look awesome. I'll be sure to spend sometime there (and here too) while I wait for my D40 to arrive.

Astonishing, simply astonishing, Theodoros. Your compositions are really beautiful and you really capture the texture of classic non-digital photography. I can't wait for my D40 to arrive to start hitting the streets of Barcelona.
