Thanks BMan! :) I'll try and do some experimenting this weekend. I've never owned anything more than a 2MP point and shoot so I have a lot of stuff to figure out...

Yeah, I feel ya! Before I got my D50, I had just used point-and-shoots all my life... DSLR's bring photography to a whole new level, and it is really FUN to take pictures!

That's a cute dog... I like the pose of the first pic... but I like the tight focus on the eyes of the second.

tommy... you didn't exactly tip-toe in did you? :)

Congrats on the D200... I'm sure you'll be pleased.

Hey Tommy... out of curiosity... how much did you pick the 200 up for? And, for the rest of the Nikon dudes here, what would be a benefit of upgrading from my 50 to the 200 at some point?

My single most favorite feature of my Nikon is the remote TTL flash function. I honestly think this impacts the end results of my photography more then any other single factor... aside from a bunch of other details that the D200 owners can explain... this one is the first thing that comes to mind.

Thanks Matt! I like it so far. I've taken a few quick shots from my balcony overlooking beautiful N Hollywood. You can probably spot the local drug dealer in a couple of them... hehe

I bought the body off of craigslist for 1000 bucks. The guy wanted 1200. And I picked up the lens for another 1000 bucks, so 2000 total. I think brand new, the camera and lens setup that I just got would run in the neighborhood of about 3500 - 4000 give or take, so I got a GREAT deal I think. :)

I think the main difference, besides the megapixel difference, is how easy it is to change your settings, like ISO and all that. I guess it depends on what you're using it for. I'd seriously like to get into professional photography, which is why I paid what I did for a camera. There are also better metering modes. The D200 has, I believe, 11 verses 5 on the D80, but don't quote me on that. It's also got several (5, I think) custom white balance settings - things like that...

Here's a couple of my very first photos... I didn't do anything at all with these except crop and resize. I don't even know what the settings were...

D200 vs. D50

First of all, completely different animals all together. In general right out of the camera you will get a better image (jpg) out of the D50. The processing engine of the D50 is just tuned nicely whereas most people find the image out of the D200 to be somewhat soft. All my D200 images require processing.

In general the benefits of the D200 over the D50 are simple:
1. 10MP vs. 6MP (more about this below)
2. Commander flash mode
3. Weather sealed body
4. Metering with AI lenses
5. 5 FPS burst shooting
6. Viewfinder ISO

Then again, the benefits of the D50 over the D200 are:
1. 6MP vs. 10MP (more about this below)
2. Smaller
3. Lighter
4. Great image out of the camera
5. High ISO performance

Regarding the 10MP vs. 6MP, the more MP (when it comes to Nikon) the more noise.

I will say this, the sensor in the D50 amazes me. It is absolutely incredible. You can easily shoot at ISO800 all day long with no problems. On top of the ISO 1600 looks like film, whereas on the D200 it most certainly does not.

Now, do the features of the D200 merit an upgrade from the D50?

I made the upgrade simply because I shoot a ton of weddings and that was the camera that the person I was working with used (he had three, I now have two), otherwise, I would say no.

The D80 is a vert cool camera with the exception of the inconsistency of the metering, but overall, it is a great camera.

Finally, and most importantly, exhaust all features of your camera before you rush to upgrade. Changing cameras will not, I repeat, will not make you a better photographer (actually a move to the D200 or even D80 will show more of the shortcomings of your skill over the D50/D40)... Invest in glass.

Tonight I was looking at some portfolio shots of this kid who is going to assist me at a wedding in a couple of weeks and his stuff is great, and all shot on a D70 (non S), but with nice glass... top notch stuff.

So, should you upgrade your camera? No, invest in good glass. The $1200 a D200 sells for right now is what a 17-55 f/2.8 costs new. You could also be $400 away from the 70-200 VR f/2.8 or $300 from the 28-70 f/2.8.

Then again, for people like Brandon who like shooting primes, if you had $1200 you could:
35 f/2: $200
50 f/1.4: $200
85 f/1.8: $300
180 f/2.8: $500

Screw it... the A's just tied this game, I'm pissed and not typing anymore.

The whole reason I went with the D200 is because - for about 1400, give or take, I could get the D80. Then I found the ad in craigslist for the D200 that I bought with the 17-55 f/2.8 and said screw it... for an extra 800 bucks I get the better camera and a really nice lens...

Seaking of lenses... Jeremy, what lens are you using on the D200 for you to say that the image is a little soft? Just curious...
