And I do love the photo above.

Has anyone used the Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO Macro HSM Autofocus Lens? It's less than the Nikon lens of the same zoom range / aperture, but quite a bit less expensive. Does it stack up to the Nikon?

Here's the B&H link:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...s&Q=&sku=435161&is=USA&addedTroughType=search

It is very soft wide open and has some slight distortion around the extremes.

For a similar price look at the Nikon 80-200 f/2.8. If you go to KEH.com you can get the Nikon equal to HSM (known as AF-S) for the same price or you can get a non AF-S version for $400.

When it comes to third party lenses there are very few that I am a fan of, but this is just my opinion as your experience and/or copies might vary.. Personally speaking these are the third party that I have had good luck with:

Sigma:
24mm f/2.8
28mm f/2.8
105mm f/2.8
10-20mm f/4.0-5.6
24-70mm f/2.8
50-500mm f/4.0-6.5
120-300mm

Tokina
12-20mm f/4.0

Tamron
18-50 f/2.8

Now, I haven't used many Tamron or Tokina lenses so there might be some amazing versions out there.

For lens reviews check out fredmiranda.com they have a complete database breaking things down or just go to your local store and check out models. I have had great luck with Sigma glass while others report tons of problems.

Oh man, you have no idea... this camera is amazing! I took the photo for the dof contest and when I pulled it into photoshop... just... wow... :)

I need to make a list... :D

Let's see, SB-800, circular polarizing filter, telephoto lens, hmm... what else?

The guy that sold me the camera also has a Sigma 300mm f/4 prime for sale too for 350 bucks. Not sure I'd want a 300mm prime though. I'd rather have a zoom. Or have the 300mm on top of a 200mm zoom. That'd be nice.

I've seen the Tokina and Tamron lenses listed and they seemed pretty inexpensive. Looks like they're good for wide angles from what you say. keh.com is a great link by the way. I'm going to check out fremiranda.com now. Thanks for the links!

keh.com is a pretty good site, they didn't get good ratings at resellerratings.com but I got my Nikon FE and 50mm 1.4 lense from them.

just spent a good day and a half reading this whole thread from the beginning to the end...I wish I read this earlier so that I would have saved up just a bit more for the D50 [only reason I want a DSLR is for the ability to CC it in Photoshop although i think i can do that if i just scan my pictures in; and I dont have to go process the films]...I'll probably get the Nikon DSLR later in the game. Although I want to buy one, i'll think i can contain myself and stick with the 35mm

I think I read somewhere that any Nikons could post so I'll post as soon as I get my scanner up n running...hopefully my scanner doesn't suck...

Yeah, which lens. :) It looks a little wide to me. I was guessing about a 24mm. I'm trying to train my eyes to recognize lens angles.

Here's some I took today... I was VERY HAPPY with a lot of these :)

I just love this one... I don't usually go B&W, but this one really works :)

AND... a self timer picture! It actually sort of worked... focus wasn't SPOT ON, but close enough.

These were all shot with my good ol' 50mm f1.4

Close... yeah, wide angle's have a certain look... my favorite look by far is still my 50mm. Just love it!

That's right up there with the photoshop sucks comment I heard the other day, no offense. That's like saying fire sucks. Or hammers suck.

This thing, lives in my back yard, and it scares the hell out of me.

Brandon I like the last pic of your lady. The lighting is very nice. Mabe a little to much nose shadow, but still nice. In most of the shots, I've seen of her, the lighting is flat Try that shot again, but have the key light on the same side as the part in her hair. Just a thought.

Well, I'm coming from personal experience (when I was a kid I used to think filters were awesome and cool too); my own thoughts when I see an obviously filtered image, and other people's reactions to filtered photographs posted on other artistic communities.

Here's and example of a reaction from what an art forum where I posted what you two said in an effort to get a link or something to point you guys to:

Fires and hammers both suck when you **** up with them hardcore.

Ever hit your finger with a hammer? Ever burn your ******* house down? (Bacon)
This guy is a working, professional artist; he's gone to school, he's got the credentials, and that's his response to your comments...

(I might want to mention that the forum is brutal with the crits it gives out; that wasn't the response I was quite hoping for, but there you go.)

I don't mean to offend, honestly. Filters have there place occasionally, but 99.9% of the time they shouldn't be used. If you want something to look like water color, get a painter to paint you a water color, use the photo as reference if you have to. Filters are generic, they're cheap, and they give a standard effect that anybody can get because they can push a button. That's not art.

Take a photo, color correct it, do your own paintover, but don't rely on a computer algorithm to make an image look like something that it's not. I hope you see where I am coming from. :)
