Nikon unveils a 4k Camera, wee what you get from Nikon

Nikon1 J5 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-100mm, gives UltraHD at 15fps, Wait couple more years and you might get a 24p. On the bright side Nikon is adding 720p/120fps.

*GIGANTIC FACEPALM*

Really? REALLY?!? If you can't do 24fps you can't do 4K. Nail in the coffin for Nikon video for me.

Especially because the camera can apparently do full resolution stills at 60 fps!

I always wished for great things from these camera's, the sensor size would be ideal to adapt super 16mm lenses to.

Sometimes it looks like they don't have a clue about what they are doing...
Oh, yes, they do. But this is what happens when you buy the latest and the bestest Sony sensors - you can't compete against Sony for a 18-24 month stretch in a given market segment. To offset this negative impact, Nikon gets superior technology for their stills models where they can squeeze huge profits out of the higher end DSLR segment and, at this time, the 610-750-810 market size is a lot larger and more lucrative than the consumer/ enthusiast/non-pro 4K. Is J5 a joke? Indeed. But that's the best Nikon can do right now. They aren't competing in the FS7/C300 weight class anyway.

What this implies to me is that Sony might have an RX10 type of a 4K camera coming out shortly with the same 1" BSI sensor at its core. A 4K hybrid from Nikon in a 610/810 body should be coming sometime in 2016.

As a side note, I'll mention that Sony has just sold off half of their Olympus holdings (used to be 20%, now 10%). Olympus, to state the obvious, doesn't have a 4K camera in its lineup either.

People here are delusional, this is a $ 500 interchangeable camera with a Kit lens. What were you expecting an alexa!!! If you follow Nikon peoduct cycle you will know that the main advancement come in two ways. Once every four years with the releases of its flagship D3/D4 and D800 type camera, which themselves get a mid term update evolution in between and some test bed tech that they implement in entry level camera like the moire/alias free, very good lowlight D5200 camera that first used pixel binning. This camera has it purpose, imagine that it has a better processor than the top of the line D4s and D810 camera. The latest D810 and D750 already have some of the best 1080p out of any dslr. This indicates that you will have at least 4k in the next update of the D4/d800 and all future Nikon bodies in the next two years.

Their update might be incremental but they are getting their, contrary to the A7s and Nx1 their camera don't have big flaws like rolling shutter, or lack of DR and low light in the NX1 or crappy colour science that needs to an expert colourist in the Sony cameras. I see the same analogy made about Canon on internet board where the geeks can only comprehend resolution. But yet when you see pro usage or more artistic usage like film festival, the Canon is everywhere because the C100/C300 line are balanced cameras with no big flaws like appalling rolling shutter or colour science.

BNH price is $1,046.95

On the other hand you can get this 5 star Samsung NX500 with 4k at 24p and kit lens for only $800, also does HEVC

If we start to compare camera price with attached lens then we can make price seems much higher, for example we could make the J5 a $ 2500 camera by coupling it with 24=70mm 2.8. I mean if you take out the kit lens this is a $ 400 camera, no one was that shock or outraged when the $ 400 Gopro 3 came out with 4k at 15 fps 2 years ago. It was all the contrary if I remember well and this much more camera than any gopro.

If this camera comes out with super good and detailed 1080p would you complain for $ 400, with super autofocus (look at the promo they have on sensor phaze detect autofocus al around the sensor, something I am sure Nikon is working very hard to implement). I personally don't care about this camera (Dr does not look good as aptina sensor are more 10 to 11 stop) but it encourage me to believe that they are committed to video.

Nikon's is also a smaller CX sensor. I would love to see a Nikon 4k at the NAb but my hunch is Nikon has and will always trail in features.

2 years ago is two years ago. This is a crippled camera by design. At the very worst, if the processing power was insufficient, they could have put in a better chip and raised the price a little ... but they obviously can't for the reasons described.

In any case, Panasonic is offering several system (lens included) cams with 4K for $800, which is pretty close to J5 with a kit lens. But Panasonic only buys an occasional sensor from Sony and is not bound by these non-compete contracts.

I'm not asking for the world with these cameras. I just want 24p with manual control of shutter/aperture/iso. That is IT. I would buy one immediately if this occurred.

Of course I wasn't expecting an Alexa either. But a 4K camera that can't shoot 24p? Come on...

This is no typo, some are sold on Nikon's DR even with a 15fps, luckily those are becoming few and far between. On the other hand many like myself have dropped Nikon in search of enhanced features for videography. That's why their sales have plummeted and will continue to do so based on their lack of response to customer demands and needs over the years. Andrew Reid with EOSHD published an article about the plummeted sales in DSLR and Mirrorless, a link is below and to quote him:

"This advice has been met with an arrogance built on a decade of increasing sales. Now in an era of falling shipments both companies have blamed smartphones and the world economy. For me this is unacceptable, it’s all about the product. Sales are down because the products aren’t good enough"

I still have a Nikon D7000 with few lenses, kept it for photography and it meets my needs and more for the time being. What Nikon needs to understand is that video features will help them boost sales, I am willing to invest regularly in their cameras if they give me value in each upgrade. To the contrary I can still use my four years old D7000 for another 4 years without the need to upgrade. I don't need more megapixels, I am not a sports shooter, so I don't care about that extra frame you are giving me either. By the way I use my D7000 for paying photography gigs and it works just fine for me. On the other hand I could use multiple DSLR's on one single shoot and would be more than willing to upgrade regularly as they come out with new models if they give me useful features that will enhance my small business productivity and offerings. I am not one of those that will be sold on an extra stop of DR or an extra HI ISO. Before making any video camera related purchase I ask myself the following questions:

1. What does this new camera purchase has that my existing gear doesn't?
2. Will this new feature help my productivity and enhance my final product?
3. Are those features and enhancements worth X amount of $$$ upgrades.

If the answer is not positive to all of these questions you are not getting my hard earned money. I am assuming many of you on this forum use your rigs to make money, if that's the case you should treat your purchases based on business needs and not based on hypes of an extra stop of DR. Believe me your small business clients will not know the difference. There are always exceptions to the rule but non the less be wise with your upgrades.

In terms of sales, the point&shoots are practically dead due to the smart phones. The APS-C and FF cameras in the $1,000 range and up are actually doing pretty well. I assume that the manufacturing costs there have decreased significantly while the prices stayed up and this allows some hefty profit margins for the industry leaders. In a more competitive market, you'd have seen a ton of 4K products between $2,000 and $5,000 already. Alas, in photo/video, without any major Chinese or South Korean competitors - those have basically moved onto the smart phone business - the Japanese manufacturers tend to protect each other by allowing these niche monopolies to linger a while longer.

In terms of particular models - apparently, Sony wants to introduce A7 and/or A7000 with an internal 4K but they're having some heat and/or software glitches. Canon should come out with a 5D based internal 4K model by this fall and, after that, it will become your typical free-for-all. One of the delays may also be due to the industry wait for the 4K Blu-Ray, which will make 4K far more accessible to an average household. Then there's expectation for growth in the 4K TV market, which currently holds ~ 10% of the US and far less globally. Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. are, of course, all global brands. They need for that market to mature just a tad more.

And because this camera is better at all that it has to have useless 4k? That logic is just too funny. Isn't 15fps Charlie Chaplin territory?

This is a product aiming consumers who dont even have any idea what fps are...but 4k...everyone knows! So...they ll buy it (hey look my camera does 4k!!!)...they ll use it...(hm...motion is a bit strange...hmmm) and they re going to like it (who cares about motion...IT IS 4k!!!) So simple! I dont defend Nikon here...just being realistic. And I dont expect Nikon and Canon to offer anything revolutionary even at the 1500-3000$ price range. One is protecting Sony, the other is protecting their C line...!

I am bot bashing the camera, actually it looks like one of the best mirrorless camera and designs out there, it's a huge leap in Nikons mirrorless line, it even looks like a little DF. I love it and the price is excellent.

It's the inclusion of a 4K mode and marketing it saying ''i am a 4k movie star'', not just that, but releasing a 15fps promo in 2015!

They have to excuse us from being sarcastic and bullying on it as a video community. Small marketing mistakes like this permanently affect the entire product line, asserting to many it's a Nikon toy to all filmmakers, even if it does have an excellent 1080p mode...

I never say these childish internet bashes but this time, Whoever thought about marketing this feature as 4K video, and whoever agreed, went out to shoot the ''video'', that entire department should be fired, they are a threat to the Nikon corporation!
