Nikon D90 young girl Color grading

Focus, focus, focus....
I personally didn't care for the grading.

Liked the stuff with Anoop much better.

To each his own. Do you have any links so I can check out some of your stuff? I am always trying new techniques, Some work.. Some suck... But I just keep experimenting..

Just click on the ZazaCast Films banner (www.zazacast.com).
The D90 was used in the opening of "Twisted".

...and yes, please take all comments with a grain of salt...and keep experimenting!

Dude, you posted for feedback, didn't you?!

I think the grading has left your subject and the background looking too warm. I gotta say I preferred this you posted on Youtube dated August '09:
Nikon D90 85mm F/1.4 lens Color grade HD

Was the D90 set to Vivid while you were shooting?

I think the colors are pretty good but that the blacks are a bit too crushed. I like to use the NL setting and dial down the contrast all the way. Just my personal flavor.

If you want feedback, here you go:

1) blacks are crushed far too heavily to the point of being distracting.
2) the boxes from the opening wide are obviously not the same as the box from the reverse CU
3) she drops her head in the CU, then again in the wide. might wanna slide the wide a few frames to match action.
4) when she turns to walk away she's up to full gait before the cut, but after the cut it looks like she's just getting going.
5) the final shot is just dark all the way around. more light on the girl might help. I know the mood is dark, but you can put more light on her without killing the mood.
6) shallow DOF is nice, but I'd say over half of the action is out of focus which seems a bit excessive. maybe follow focus on some of the action.

I was using the Nikon 85mm F1.4 lens.. I used colorista on the color grade. The first one I did not use the scopes. on the second one I used the scopes..

The second one was MUCH more palatable.

Agree about the blacks being too crushed, leaving no information on the low end.
If you do this you will most likely have to bring down your gamma.

i like the first one, i wish the blacks were not crushed so much, to my eyes you loose lots of details and emotions the scene provides..

A good tip for color grading is you should work on different parts of the image one at a time instead of applying just one overall filter. For example, use a mask to isolate the girl's face and skintone area and correct that first, then use an inverse mask to correct the surrounding. Use as many masks as needed to draw attention or de-emphasize areas of the image as appropriate. Gives you much more flexibility.

i definitely agree about masks and power windows being a necessity, but it can mean a lot of work, i tend to prefer color keyed secondaries, although sometimes with power windows as garbage mattes.
