Back to the original question...

Okay,

So I've been very impressed with the results of lossfest and I'm looking at investion in some new equipment.

Here is what I'm looking at: Money IS a factor, and as much as the Scarlet would be awesome, it would mean an entirely new computer and an upgrade to CS4... both of which are out of the budget... which is about $2000 at this point.

I've got a DVX100b and I'd like to either add a 35mm adapter to it, or buy an SLR like the d90 or the new GH1 from panasonic.

So what do you think?

I'm looking to be making shorts and perhaps even feature length, and I'm editing with premiere cs2 and AE.

*Sorry, I put HD1 in the poll, but I meant the GH1.

I can make do with the DVX for now... its a great camera, so the 4th option would be to wait a bit and see if the Scarlet comes down in price over the next year and upgrade my other hardware then...

Any input would be great.

I sold my Letus Extreme and set of nikon lenses (the setup wasn't worth the hassle) to buy the D90 and Tokina 11-16 f2/8.

Couldn't be happier or more pleased with the results.

Where's the fun in that?

Hey, there is still the big red carpet premiere.

I forgot to add to the list of demands: the camera also needs to hook up its owner with a hot actress like Charlize Theron, Monica Bellucci, Jessica Alba, etc... that would add at least a $1K value to the MSRP.

Well the GH1 does come in red but it doesn't do 200mph, maybe a big lens might impress the ladies. As Matt and I have discussed previously the D90 doubles as a device used to get models to remove their clothing.

I'd buy a D90 just for the low light performance. If this is just for web or DVD its quality is good enough for indies. It's performance would save you a tone on lighting gear that you would have to put down for a 35mm adapter. You could light you film for a home depot if you did it right. You can get shots quickly us 35mm adapter users need 5k of light to get.

The low light is a huge factor in terms of my interest in these HD DSLR cameras. I thought long and hard about getting a 35mm adapter this year, but at this rate I'd rather wait. I'll just have to deal with a 1/3 sensor cam until later this summer or early fall, after the dust has settled and I can make an informed decision.

GH-1 is June...depends.

First, I wouldn't touch a D90 with a 10-foot poll.

GH-1 IF it has HDMI output would be ok but with 1/4 the sensor that won't be 35mm bokeh.

A whole 5DM2 is not much more than the adapter (the lenses are the same), and all the manual workarounds are no more aggravation than the adapter. The 5DM2 will blow away anything that looks like a video camera (unless you are getting a Red or SI2K) because of the oversampled sensor. Or, if the posts are correct, horizontally oversampled sensor.

Last, if you are going to shoot a significant project now, you could just rent an adapter. In 12 months there will probably be a few big sensor, interchangeable lens, uncompressed output alternatives.

Sorry, its early and I replied before looking around. I was in the mode of "what esle is comming out?" and it didn't even register that the 5dm2 was already out.

The trouble is, that its running in the price area of the Scarlet, and I think that's still a bit out of my range.

I notice the poll is putting the d90 in the lead as the choice but there isn't a lot of discussion as to why.

Basically I wan't to get the best equipment possible, and I'm a little worried that if I go the d90 route, I'll be looking back in a year wishing I had waited. d400? Has there been any real talk of this? Price?

This might sound silly and it seems like a lot of people here upgrade gear every other month :D but I'm looking to get a setup that I'll be able to work with for some time into the future.

You can go to nikonrumors.com but there is really no firm evidence of release dates ,price and specs on the D400 and D800. But it's likely they will both be released this year with HD capabilities. They'd probably have similar pricing to the D300 and D700. I'm not that excited about the GH1's narrower feild of view and deeper depth of field. There are also rumors of a canon rebel coming out soon to compete with the D90. You should probably wait for the rebel or the D400 which would both be in your price range. And if we're lucky Nikon might respond with a D90 firmware update. 35mm adapters are dead like the dodo. This is the year of the HDSLR and there will probably be at least half a dozen of them by the end of it.

Watch the firmware update come out the day after I sell my D90......I think I might hold onto it and do some comparisons with the GH1. I hope I can get the body only without the slow zoom.

Okay so I bought the d90... now I know that I'm jumping the gun and I think that I'll be taking the advice of waiting for a d800 or firmware upgrade, but this is the situation. I was talking to the sales guy and telling him my delema and he suggested that I take the camera for the 2 week trial period and see what its like hands on. So thats what I'm doing...

Its a bit of a step away from the dvx, but I'm getting some nice images... luckily I have one 50mm lens that is manual so I can get some good stuff with the movie mode. But it is a bit of a pain to set up isn't it?

So I think my plan is to shoot my next film with my dvx in April, and then wait to get some hands on experience with the gh1 and, fingers crossed, see if Nikon has anything else comming out.

Oh, I can't see a setting for frame rate with the d90... is it 24fps?

thanks.
