nikon d90 footage to 35mm

Lots of nice work here, thank you for sharing your film.

The choice of shooting monochrome, the titles with white text over black, the lighting and look of most of the dinner/family shots made it feel like an old film - not quite silent movie era but an interesting deliberately dated look. Choosing that look to tell a story about current web technology impacting lives was very interesting. Mixing in the generational stories about the families added to the impact of the new and old banging up against each other.

It's difficult to comment without the sound track complete but the pacing of the edits seemed inconsistent. Some scenes were solid, smooth, revealing the characters and the story but leading us on wondering where it all was going. Other scenes the pacing of the edits seemed like they were from a different edit, maybe a rough that needed polish.

You may have done that deliberately but I found myself lost in the story on the smooth parts and observing the production value on the rougher parts. The sound edit was the most obvious issue but the visual edit was inconsistent as well.

You've done so well in so many ways that working to bring all elements in the production up to the same high level would be wise. I'd also suggest playing with the new/old motif in as many ways as possible.

Excellent.

Excellent.

Well done, really well done! The best thing I saw on DVX user so far. It actually looked like a movie not a pathetic indie rip off of another movie. Sure its not perfect but what is. Only my opinion but the major thing your movie is lacking is a soundtrack. If possible you should get someone who can compose a simple soundtrack on piano, violin/bass, something subtle and classical.

I aslo would love to know if this vimeo clip I just saw is the film transfer or just the D90. I would love to know the difference in the look if it changed drastically. Well done again, your talented.

I think because the d90 has a 16mm feel to it, that it looks right in balck and white.

Oh I would love to know how you did the Audio, what equipment?

That was a really great short film!

Maybe it's just me but you could have considered shooting in a neutral color, then tinker in post? I still like how it came out, and it has to be the best D90 video I've seen..EVER.

Story-wise, it kept me watching, and considering my short attention span, 20 minutes of any video is a challenge haha.

Editing could be a tad tighter, but not much else I can think of, I thought it was really a masterpiece.

Great! Thanks for putting it up. Was totally absorbed there. I just spent the last three months shooting a short in BW with an effing d90; for my project and evidently yours there's something that feels right with black and white, could be the 16mm feel as someone mentioned before.

I think your actors did a really good job. How did you get Lou Reed?

You say you haven't finished sound design yet I thought the silence near the end was effective (when Pri's father sat down at the monitor and you cut to the webcam images).

Thanks again for putting it up for us.

Thank you all for the attention on my topic and short film. I am really getting close to an end in the works of this film and its important to have the last comments before writing it to 35mm. In the last Part of the film i will let the silence as it is by now.

heheh i hope they will at least watch the film. but i never get into american film festival, maybe this one the north americans will enjoy more.

this is my fourth short-film

im now finishing this one and trying to raise funds for my first feature. already written. another film about "something that went wrong in the lifes of the mid-class and riches that try to think that nothing can go wrong with them" hehe

ciao

How did you work out with the acting and the casting? It feels VERY natural; not only they have the talent, our direction is solid.

The only minor issue with the D90 is the cars passing by at 12:33, outside that, the Rolling Shutter and all other D90 limitations are quite invisible. And quite a lesson to anyone who creates doubts because of tools limitations, limitations are part of art (and life) after all

Now in Portuguese: Porra meu, teu filme tá foda. Não tiraria um frame.

beckspace, hehe valeu!!!

to direct and do the camera work was a bit of a hell to tell you the truth but i like to do that. it took me 14 days to complete this film, but i did everything, that`s why it takes long.

i did shoot almost a scene per day, sometimes two scenes.

prepared everything, the camera and the framing work. then did all the work with the actors -, the directors instruction thing, and started to film.

we filmed very slow so that i could handle the work without worries.

im actually planing to film my feature in 3 months and do everything as usual. hehe

every film i do the actors help me to carry the tripod! hehe sometimes they complain about it :P

voce tem talento for sure. my internet connection here in gran canaria sucks so i could only watch os primeiros minutos but i can't wait to see it all. do you plan on doing everything yourself on the feature? i chickened out and hired a dp and brought my producer along as assistant director and runner. :-)

i think i will have an assistent and producer, hehe

but i really want to be the cinematographer in the feature. even if that puts me on a tight work situation, im afraid my film can't be personal if i dont do the DOP. if i have the money i can have lots of people to do the hard work like carrying out the stuff and putting the camera in the place i want to, and maybe that's enough, or no. hehe a feature its another kind of animal, so maybe i will get myself into trouble if i shoot the way i do.

thanks matt

shoot it yourself if you think you can. as you've experienced it takes time though, you have to alternate between shooting and directing, it's very hard to do both simultaneously (i've tried and felt like half a director and half a dp (the result was good though so what do i know)). i didn't have that time plus i have a dp that i trust a lot.

You touched a sensitive nerve here.

I'm also in favor that a director being the photographer is not so far fetched as most people assume. We all know that photography consumes time, but then it creates a Stage inside the directors mind. It may not be conscious, or may not help any directing decisions, but he'll have absolute control over the scene composition.

Amazing short!

I'm thoroughly impressed. The film shows you have great mastery of the skills of production, to the point that any critique I could offer would only be purely in the realm of 'opinion'. (Your technical skills are beyond mine. )

Wish you the best with the different festivals, and I'm sure you'll get North America's attention with this one. Has a true 'new wave' feel to it, and it's extremely relevant, but in a subtle and creative manner.

Post a link to your future work in this thread. :) Again, great looking film, and truly would look awesome on film and the big screen as well! I can only imagine the strange tension in the theatre during certain parts of the film.

i havent used any ligths but in ONE scene. the rest was with avaliable lights around.

ive used a 135mm 2.0, a 50mm 1.4 and a tamron 17-35mm 2.8

ah, and a fixed 24mm 2.8

thats it

Hi Emanuel! (você é de onde?)

i only have a producer here in my city and we're trying to find some co-producer. but we're still trying to find them. i was in Locarno last year but didnt make any good contacts for a co-production or something like that. Maybe ive just found it here in the forum heheh, i can see that you have a Red One, that's interesting. send me an email (danielaragao@gmail.com) and itll be a pleasure to chat with you, if you have the time for some third world director. :) and thanks!

i will have to put the short film offline now, as ive said earlier, that it would last for the whole weekend only. its better to keep it privite by now. So thanks a lot for everyone who could watch it and thanks for the comments. this forum really works for the community of filmmaker around the globe!

as soon as i have some info on my film transferto 35mm i will post it here.

Ciao
