Nikon D90 -> Canon 7D thread

I thought the d90 was pretty nice aside from the pal 50hz lighting and the awful jello. It always irked me on static shots when my subjects look like they were going to warp away when they moved fast, or in close-ups when their face ripples slightly. It's charming in a silly way I admit.

What I am looking forward to the most with the 7d is the ability to meter with all of my fast manual AI-S nikkor lenses. With the manual control of the liveview, it'd mean you could preview the photo, and take a nicely exposed image without having to dilly dally with bracket exposuring or playing with the EV as much. If Magic Lantern gets around to doing the zebra peakings and live scopes/graphs bars while in liveview and recording, that'd be a major bonus for Still and Video. Aaah!

However, I am not looking forward to the extra weight and poorer ergonomics. I like the feel of the Nikon bodies more.

Let's wrap up the back and forth on what's appropriate for this thread, all right? Because now it's REALLY off-topic. :)

In the future, if you have a problem with a post or posts, please use the

button to bring it to the mods' attention, and refrain from slinging insults at each other. There's zero reason to make things personal in this thread. As you know, we only allow that sort of thing in the "Politics & Religion" section of this site.

Anyway, I for one am very interested in the steps a D90 owner with a collection of Nikon lenses might take to use those lenses on a 7D. Let's focus on that.

Hi D90 guys,
I'm the one that started the adapter thread linked to in post 5, I'm chiming in here because I've been shooting video on the GH1 with mostly nikon AIs lenses and the odd canon FD and I haven't had any real serious problems at all. The only real issue I think you would face is DX and G lenses will have no aperture control and one of the lenses I use like this is the nikon mount Tokina DX 11-16/2.8. At the moment I am propping the aperture open with the stem of a Q-tip.

I am really looking forward to putting nikons on a 7d, I most likely post some 7D+nikon footage as soon as I get the cam. Adapter I have ordered is the $18 Fotodiox one from ebay.

$13 sounds reasonable for an adapter. I hope they're built to last. We'll see...

Damn, in Europe we pay $600 more for the 7D than in the US. :(

I have used the Nion to EOS adapter for a couple of years both on my dof adapter and now the Canon 5D MKII. You don't need to worry that the electronics can't be controlled because if you are serious then you should shoot like a film maker and use manual lenses or the manual zoom and focus of any lens.

I have ordered the 7D and I plan on using many Nikon manual lenses on it.

If only there was a 7D board conveniently placed somewhere on dvxuser to discuss these matters.

I'm following the 7D forum. This thread is meant for D90 users who sometimes have a different (aesthetical) view on things than let's say a DVX user (don't take this example too seriously). Unlike in other parts of the forum, we all here love the D90 (at least some aspects of it) and I was particularly interested in these people's opinion. Having said all that, I thought this thread would develope differently...

Is anyone @ Nikon listening??!!

Is anyone @ Nikon listening??!!

I don't want to abandon Nikon at this point--the d90 is a GREAT still cam, and a good intro 24p cam.

When will Nikon step up to the plate on the movie issue? Canon may capture the hybrid dSLR/movie market if Nikon doesn't show some commitment soon to improving their offerings. Just knowing that they are paying attention to this issue, without a specific release announcement would be music to my ears. (And why have we still not seen a d90 firmware upgrade).

Doesn't anyone on this forum have a contact in the Nikon corporate organization? What are they thinking? Nikon is a smart company--they must realize the value of the movie mode--but why won't they say so??!!

Filmmakers like us are just a fraction of their customerbase and the only consumerfriendly slr-like camera is the GH1 imho.
When I peek at photoforums many see the moviefunction as something they can do without and that a dedicated camcorder is much more versatile.

But Nikon has something up it's sleeve in the middle of October.

I've been in contact with nikon on a very high european corporate level and they're not sure themselves what's going on in japan, i suspect the japanese sales organization isn't either. But they assured me development and manufacturing always listen and that it pays to give them feedback. It's just never clear which feedback they'll respond to and why. I quote: "they respond only with products". :-)

Thanks for the insight Matt! Are you going to get a 7D?

I will test the camera first, if that's possible somehow, before I make a decision. Still not quite sure if it will translate my visions into something as beautiful as what the D90 is capable of...

i'm not sure. i want to but i won't be doing any serious filmmaking until next year, maybe even next summer, so i'll wait and see. right now i'm too busy finishing my feature, going to med school, and having a baby. i like keeping busy but everyone has a limit. :-)
