Nikon D7100 vs Panasonic gh2 sharpness

Yes, I had do double check :), the NO 1 is the gh2 and the second one was the D7100. I don't know if it was you or someone else but you should not put too much conclusion on the exposure or DR. I did the test very close in term of time but the light might have change a little bit. The second thing is that I wanted a deep dof so the aperture on the Nikon it was 7.1 but I had to second guest the exposure by eye on the gh2 (Nikon g adapter with no markings) .

Oh cool. I also thought it was confirmed the other way around for some reason, but this makes more sense. The GH2 picture looks fuzzy in comparison (lacking crispness), something I've always thought about the GH picture after working with it for a long time.

My choice about the 7.1 was mostly to get the most DOF with the amount of light that I had for the image not be too dark. So that depth of field and corner sharpness of the lens would not alter the result. I hope you have downloaded the frame grabs, I would really like to get some feedback from everyone about the sharpness/detail of the D7100. There are so many half done test that can screw people mind like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gbf-CDd-AY where 75 000 viewers will think that the 5dmark 3 is sharper than the D7100!!!

Daniel.

When I purchased the D7100 after selling my D7000 on ebay, I thought at the very least I will have a camera with more megapixels for photos and more functions available in camera. I was willing to accept the same ole' moire, aliasing and more or less the same resolution as the D7000. However, When I got D7100 and saw the resolution difference and the ability to shoot scenes which i would have never been able to shoot before with the 7D or D7000, I was really amazed. With the D7100, I have about 80% to 85% of what I was looking for in a DSLR (Cons: Fixed Pattern Noise, Resolution that is not "Truly" as good as the GH3 series cameras at 1080/60p 50Mbps IPB and 24p 72Mbps ALL-I).

Samuel,

I was referring to Diffraction in an APS-C sensor in relation to F/4 to around f/5.6 or f/8, which are in most lenses where the lenses exhibit their maximum center sharpness. As you stop down further than f/4 to f/8 on most lenses on an APS-C sensor, although the overall image, center to extreme edge, will be sharper than at f/1.4, the center sharpness will begin to fall off past F/5.6 to f/8. Eventually, not only will the sharpness in the center begin to degrade, but also the overall image.

The dxomark numbers are for raw stills, if someone managed to get something like ML working on that toshiba sensor, so it records RAW, it would be a hell of a camera: 14 stops of usable DR on an APS-C sensor with no aliasing or moire and recording uncompressed RAW? It would be a killer. But so far that's only an opotion on the Canon side, which has much more limited DR.

As i already commented on NFS, RAW video on Nikons would be the REAL revolution, not the Canons IMO. I have no hack related knowledge at all but what i still cannot understand is why on earth there's no success at all with Nikon hack to try to deliver ML RAW like video until date. (LiveRaw in lastest firmware AFAIK...anyone)? I realize ML is such a huge community but come on: Toshiba sensor (D5200 + D7100) no moire/aliasing 14 DR stops is such a beast. Sony's on D800; FF 15 DR stops is a monster. Anyway....

Also, as I said, the 5D3+RAW is about to get even better. If you're thinking about buying a camera in the next couple of weeks and it's not that one, I would say: wait. Just wait.

Hmmmmm.... sounds PRETTY exciting. Can you please elaborate it Samuel?

For me, I would prefer a 10 bit log codec compared to raw at least now. It is true that we would get near Alexa/sony f5 image, if there was a raw hack, but the practicality of it that is the problem now. For a PR stunt, it would be the best thing for Nikon video if they could release a firmware with this possibility even in short burst or give the tool for hackers to do it. So that it remains unofficial and they don't have to manage it. I think that next update to their dslr line like a Nikon D801 or D7200 will have raw output. With the ML hack, it will be difficult to go back and I believe the last one to do it will be Canon.

Yes, that was it. Amazing, right? :)

I also think a RAW camera with the toshiba sensor and a mirrorless mount is the first best, but I don't see Nikon bringing that to market...

RAW 4k 60fps like the V1 with no time limitation please!!

Absolutely!! As soon as ML get to a proper highlight/shadow usable interpolation (or anything that may work in these terms) i'll be completely sold... Early days though. I hope magic is still to happen ;)

I am always a big proponent of better image quality. But for all those thinking that raw will make their image much better, I hope they go and look at people that have had raw imagery for nearly a decade and see how good.... sorry how ugly it is. Just go and look at photography website, you won't see more that 10% photos that is any good.

So for those that think shooting raw will make a big difference to their footage; that it will be Hollywood imagery at a push of a button, then good luck to you. For the more sensible one, you should take your time and money to go and learn a basics of the craft. This camera is looking already very good. Gh2 resolution with 11 - 12 stop DR without moire/aliasing and about 2 stop better ISO is really really good already. When my gh2 is back I will conduct some further test and I have chosen to invest in a Ninja rather than a Blackmagic pocket cam.
