Nikon D7000 - Product Photography Test

I've stopped worrying if switching to this camera from the 7D was a good move. Now I just want to keep getting better so I can do this camera justice.

Me LIKEY....and wanna see more!! Thanks for posting. Anyone else have some "professional" shot D7000 footy? (Seems most pros are ignorning this cam...and I understand why....but then you see some footy....and it's like...DANG!)

ps...your vid doesn't say "D7000"....so...it must be you that shot it....(to know that it's the D7000?) NICE WORK!

pps....could you please shoot some ISO25600 footy? Just wanna see it compared to the D3s...to see if some of that Mojo crossed over to the "little brother". I've seen some online...but it wasn't shot by a pro...it "proper" conditions. Anywho....nice work!

Yeah, that was my first gig with the D7k.
WOWSER....pretty impressive stuff. I ~***LOVE***~ the look of Nikon footy. You say that you have so regrets crossing over from the 7d. Any other footy or perspective? (Sorry so many questions, but there really aren't very many owners on our forum...especially ones that are "pros", like you. :)

Just because internet forum keyboard jockies aren't chatting about it all day doesn't mean pros are ignoring the camera :) It was actually recommended to me from a mentor of mine. It's no game-changer though. Not that much of a difference from T2i/60D/7D video.

25600 is just really noisy. Not really worth shooting at that unless you would rather a noisy mess instead of nothing at all.

haha I'm far from a pro. I shot that in my college's photography studio.

Yeah, I also like what I'm seeing out of this camera. Raw stills blow 7D stills out of the water. So much more dynamic range. I can find so much seemingly noiseless detail hidden in the shadows it's amazing.

Something about the way the 7D treated highlights bugged me. Now with the D7K I don't worry anymore about getting close to clipping the highlights. Colors feel better, but I don't know if it's just what I'm shooting or if the colors are actually better.

Video-wise, it still has Canon aliasing/moire problems. Even though it's half the bitrate of the 7D, it must be much more efficient because I've yet to look at footage and see any significant compression artifacts.

It's slower to shoot video with than a 7D. No histogram in live-view, and having to get out of live-view to change the aperture on newer lenses adds a couple steps in the process before you can press record.

That's all I can think of right now, but I know there's more.

Thanks for taking time AdvanTech. Thanks for info on ISO25600. I ask because the D3s is STUPID clean at ISO25600. Also....just note that I saw someone (on a forum) said you can take a picture in video mode...and you can change the aperture there....still a pain...but a bit faster. :) Thanks again! Thanks for the info on the "hidden highlights" too. Do you mean in photos? Or in videos also? (I've heard others say the same)

Yeah, not stupid clean.

It's not that the highlights were hidden, I just felt that Canon's neutral picture style boosted the highlights in an unnatural way, or something like that. It just didn't feel right. The neutral Nikon style feels natural all the way to white, so I'm not worried about part of the histogram getting near the far right.

The, product photography test is nice, seems like the nicer looking stuff I've seen out of this camera has been very monochromatic. Probably because monochromatic content still looks good with high contrast and clipped blacks. Everything I've seen from the D7000 seems to have clipped blacks and highlights as well, perhaps it is the same issue of computers reading ComputerRGB encoded files as StudioRGB just like with the 5Dmk2 when it came out? It's really been bothering me. I would love to experiment with ways of getting all that latitude that is available in RAW available in video mode, have you had the chance to do this? Or do you think it is possible?

I wouldn't judge the dynamic range of a camera by the color corrected videos on vimeo. It actually has a lot more DR than the 7D. Here's some untouched frames from video. There is still some room to pull up the shadows and pull down the highlights:

You will never get the DR of RAW as you will with video. RAW is 14-bit, video is highly compressed 8-bit with less than favorable chroma subsampling.

I´m getting old. That means it is harder to keep an open mind. It was so easy the last two years: You want filmlook video from a DSLR? Buy a Canon. Maybe look at the GH1. But forget Nikon, let alone Sony. My bones are aching, gotta take a nap... Later guys!

BTW Great shots!

"Yeah, that was my first gig with the D7k."

So--

Is the stuttering, jerky motion I see a result of:

a) Vimeo / web browser / computer
b) Compression
c) Too high a data rate, image size
d) Shutter speed at capture
e) Frame rate / shutter speed / panning speed combo

I'm guessing e, because there seems to intentionally be no motion blur, or very little motion blur.

Yeah, the shutter speed was all over the place. It was 24p and lots of hand-held.

As far as "film look"...."out of the box".....Nikon is in the lead from my perspective. That doesn't mean that Nikon's "usability" issues and compression issues make it a viable choice (in the past). Thanks for posting those screen captures. Nice looking stuff!

Your work is absolutely gorgeous. Made with a D7000....Wow!!! I am amazed you showed up to shoot such professional gigs with the D7000 and you did the client and the camera justice. Like everyone is saying....not much chatter about this camera, but you have made a big statement about it. Of course, it is your expertise that really shines through all of this. Nice work. I can't ever blame the camera after seeing this. I hope to keep getting better also, long way to go. Thank you for sharing.
