So ive not seen many videos or short films that are shot on the nikon d5300
So ive decided to start this thread.. so all the people who've shot on their d5300.. can share their videos with everyone!
Here's a link to what ive shot on the d5300 :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgUCFeLsS64 some scenes before 0:37 are shot on the d5300 and everything else from 0:42 is with the d5300! for me id say its a pretty good video dslr.. gives me good dynamic range..its sharp enough..image quality is good! for the price that we pay its a pretty great camera!

Thanks! I really appreciate it! Also ill be uploading a few short films based on cineflat and flaat 11 on the d5300..
The above short was just shot on neutral!

very nice. music also. got a little nauseous from the jerky movment in some scenes but pleasurable.

"some scenes before 0:37 are shot on the d5300 and everything else from 0:42 is with the d5300!"

did you mean that D5300 footage was after 0:42? a bit confusing but you can see the footage is different quality later on.

what lenses did you use?

The 5300 is among the best of the DSLRs. Capable of really pretty footage.

Posted this before, but - mix of D7100 and 5300 footage. Kind of seat-of-the-pants "let's go make a video today" project, fun (and very long) day:

I bought the D5300 a few months before I bought a D810. The D5300 is a pretty good HD video camera and holds up well with the D810.
The D810 has less noise on any ISO above 800, better dynamic range, and for some reason the codec seems to hold up better when there's a lot of moving detail in the frame. I like the D5300 because of the articulating screen and its tiny size can help in some situations.

I saw this and recall what a good job you did on this. Your both sister right? Nice job. Has given me the idea that I will stick with Nikon and focus more on audio, story, sets, talent, planing, etc. (Not in that order mind you :-)

That confirms what I read. The 5300 isa good mate with the 71 and 810. I wonder about the 72, which I understand does have a different sensor, etc., altho not getting a lot of praise.

yeah but that may be because the difference isnt there at all or only a tiny bit.. which may not be worth it taking into consideration the price!

Hi, I'm glad you started this thread, because I just got my D5300 today and will get the VR2 18-35mm kit lens tomorrow, so It's time to experiment :)
Quick question: What software du you primarily use for editing your videos? Can you recommend some plugins to make it look "cinematic" like you do? I know one trick people use to get the video format wide (like in films) is by cropping the top and bottom of the video off in postproduction.

Congratulations on getting a really good dslr! Please buy a good lens now! :p
Anyways I use premiere pro cc 2014.1.. N im glad you thought my footage was cinematic! :p yeah so..me personally I use magic bullet suite (colorista, looks, film, denoiser, etc) these plugins come with the suite..I use colorista..looks..N film a lot..for denoising my video I use neat video..for slow motions u can use twixtor! I think this should do it..ohh filmconvert is nice too..though I dont use it!
N the top and bottom thing you mentioned is the anamorphic look! :)
PS: Dont forget to shoot in a Flat picture profile! You can use neutral or download flaat 11.. Cineflat..to get the most dynamic range!

Thank you so much for sharing. I guess It's worth while getting familiar with adobe premiere pro when you are serious about this :)
Regarding The lens: That's what everyone tells me :P What Lenses do you recommend?

Anamorphic! I love that word, and I love the look :D
Today I'll be learning about my D5300 camera and how to usse it so I'll try using the Flat picture profile settings on it. I just checked what flat is on youtube - looks amazing!

Start by getting the 50mm f1.8 .. go from there as you learn more about the lens! do you prefer zoom or prime! if you are mostly interested in video then go for manual focus lenses!

Thanks - we really pulled it out of our butts, we just felt like a summer-day road trip. We did chat about a loose concept and line up props though.

I spent hours and hours on google street view and we had a very well prepared set of maps, routes, and a shotlist - we drove in a loop of about 100 miles. Preparation really is huge, even when you're dorking around.

We also shot all the sync at sped-up 30p and conformed down to 24… it adds a little "weight" or gravitas, subtle but I really believe it's worth it. Had every sync section as a separate track on an ipad, and had a little bluetooth speaker for sync, she could hear it and the camera picked it up fine. I kept the crane mostly assembled and taped all the cabling to it - I could get the Kessler up and ready to shoot in 4 minutes or so. Again, planning and organization, we didn't know if we'd get kicked out of locations or hassled, etc. But everywhere we went was completely deserted. Spooky. We did run into some crazy locals, but all friendly.

I just call Camille my "sis", we're sorta separated at birth besties, her and my wife have put away a vineyard worth of red wine. She's a sweet little pistol and man - a super legit singer/songwriter for that genre.

Also, any time you hear a Hot Pockets ad on the radio… she's the "hottttt pockets" singer at the end.

a 50mm f1.8 sounds good and SHARP ;)
What tripod are you using? I'm going to get a manfrotto 055XPROB, and some head for doing video and photography.
I Just got the 18-55mm Kit lens VR, it's quite sharp for a kit lens i'd say:

its a pretty good tripod you got there! I dont like tripods.. A good monopod is the way to go .. gives you more flexibility! Like a manfrotto 561 bhdv! Check it out! its a little pricey but worth it! and yeah the kit lens is good but you'll know the difference when you use primes! Its difficult to always adjust exposure when you want to zoom.. and the sharpness is okay ..its a little soft when compared to a good lens like the 50mm or a fixed aperture zoom like the 24-70 f2.8

Nice video and nice shots from the others. The Nikons look like they are really nice. Im debating on the 3300 or the 5300.

michael-

i wanted to offer up congrats on a job very well done.

i am really surprised the 5300 looked as good as it does.

was the 5300 mostly confined to the jib and the 7100 all else?

if i may ask, which nikon glass?

and lastly, perhaps share your thinking on the 30p/24/ "gravitas" sync sound idea?

again, thumbs up.

be well.
