Nikon D4 Firmware Update

i upgraded firmware on the D4 before i read that some were seeing better results for FX video, so i can only be subjective (wish i could show before/after screenshots). from what i can tell... FX video does feels better (not quite CX quality yet), DX is unusable in my opinion (nothing new there), FX has less noise than CX (especially at the higher ISO my test shots were at), and FX has more contrast than CX. while FX video feels like it has improved, i think we all wish FX was as amazing as CX crop mode is

Well what I need to know is if the FX is as good as the D800 FX - if so then i'm sold - then it's high ISO here we come.

did another test, D800e with mosaic filter vs D4, resolution looks similar, yet D4 at ISO 800, produces less noise, uploading source files.
I am happy now with my D4, time to do some more testing at night time.. :)
on video jpegs hard to tell, wait for video..vlcsnap-2013-04-03-19h52m35s49.jpgvlcsnap-2013-04-03-19h53m11s87.jpg

Oleg, f/2.8 at 800 ISO is going to make the comparison very difficult, if not impossible. IMHO,you really need to be at 100 or 400 ISO at f/5.6 or 8.

Macgregor, just did it,
took off Mosaic filter from the D800e, now D4 looks really similar in terms of resolution, which is remarkable!

D4 much better regarding moire (look at the wood part up in the shot), noise, it's for sure better than D5200, by how much, hard to tell, need to test.

shot this test 1/50, F4, ISO 640, 2000K, L. Powell Nikon profile 0.8 both, sharpening 1 on D800e, 2 on D4, having more on D800e normally creates more moire, not adding resolution, from my tests, D4 allows that with no significant drawback.

thx for putting together the comparison between the D4 video and D800... i'm pleased to see that the FX video on the D4 has made some good strides. in your examples, i noticed that some of the text is just slightly more legible on the D800 footage (example: model # on the panasonic juicer), but felt the D4 footage was cleaner (less noise)

i'm curious about the L. Powell Nikon Camera Profile you used. where can i get more information on this?

Thanks Oleg.

The D800e post sharpens much better than the D4. There's a halo on the paper towels on the right of the screen in the D4 shot. I wouldn't go over +1 on the D4. Could you shoot it with the D4 @ +1 and the D800e @ +1 with the VAF filter. Do you still have the D5200 to compare?

D4 looks a lot better than it did before. It's much closer to the D800 than it was before. My guess is that it's about at the same level as the D600. I think it's real progress. Now I wonder how it would look going into a Ninja2 and sharpening in post. Perhaps a bit more could be squeezed out of the D4. I love how clean the image is tho. The D4 has some sick Dynamic Range and low light capability.

Imagine if Nikon allowed the D4 to shoot 4K?

thank for opinions everyone, focus could be a bit of an issue here, ( on the right side of the frame), please look at the left side, the flower on the plate, the detail indistinguishable on both cameras with slight edge to D4 (to my eyes).

L.Powell Nikon Gamma controls http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?303215-Nikon-Gamma-Controls-v0-1-Beta-Test

I still have D5200, will do the test of three cameras some time today, having Mosaic filter on D800e, (which is by the way resolves more than D800)

There's a slight halo on the top edge of the D4 post sharpened banana too. I've found anything over +1 looks artificial on the D5200 too.

So are you saying the D800e resolves more detail in video mode? Does it show more moire?

I will have +1 sharpening on all cameras in tests from now on.
Yes, we speak only video mode here, and yes, more moire, on 800e, which hard to see in real filming, (particular closing, wood, brick in focus), I's say less moire than 5dmk2, both 800, 800e, produce same amount of S/N. I had 800, replaced it with 800e.

Did you test the VAF on both?

I'm grading a new D5200 film now, the colours and dynamic range are fantastic, leaves the 5D for dead!

interesting, curious to see them compared, I only used OPLF on D800e, image would be too soft on D800, imo.

There is no comparison, the D5200 is much nicer to shoot with, it handles the highlights much better and the colours are gorgeous, more like film which is not to everyones taste, people really like the Canon magenta push, the Nikon is more cyan. The only areas where the 5D comes out on top is in high ISO, full frame shallow DOF, and slightly less rolling shutter.

I'm having a tough time deciding on a D800e or a C100, the C100 wins in resolution, high ISO, rolling shutter, and moire, but I really like the Nikon colours, full frame sensor, and $3000 in my pocket.

OK, did another run. Same everything, D5200 does not have K settings. uploading files.
D800e with oplf possibly wins a hair in resolution, at iso 200, D5200 looks a bit softer than full frame on both D800e, D4. the colors are a bit dull on D5200

D4 has a higher latitude by about a stop, by perception, and better than all, in CX mode, ( if shooting anamorphic with LA7200 adapter, angle of view is 30% wider, so for example 16 50 2.8 zoom lens can be quite usefull, enough of WA..)
C100 is nice camera, would be great to compare with D800e. Full frame on the other hand has its advantages.

the files are uploading.. will edit the post when done..
