Nightwish

By 'old' and 'new' I assume you mean Tarja getting replaced by Annette? Two different style singers so I don't have a 'favorite' as they both bring something unique to the band. What I haven't heard yet is Annette doing the old songs. I just can't imagine her trying to do it note for note like Tarja so I'm wondering what 'spin' she'll put on the songs to 'make them her own' if you will.

Maybe someone should pair up the Poison guys with the Nightwish chicks and create a race of Supercheese people so we never run out of velveeta bands :)!

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see (or hear) much similarity between a symphonic/power metal band like Nightwish

and a hair metal band like Poison.

"Symphonic-power metal" vs "hair metal". Sure there are some differences. Heck, there are differences between bands, period, even within the same subcategory (say, death metal). I know guys who'll talk for hours splitting the smallest subcategories of subcategories of metal or whatever. But you know what, it's metal - basically. Sure, fans who are really into it, get into a tizzy if one hair is colored differently from one week to the next in their favorite band leader "OMG, musical revolution!", but it's still... you know, metal. I mean, I just find it funny that in the almost 30 years (i.e. 1980's) since glam metal (itself a derivative of the whole glam movement from the early 70's) has sprung up in the cruel streets of LA (har, har), there's been remarkably little evolution to today's metal flavor as in this case... there's not a heck of a distance on the darwinian evolution scale from Poison------->Nightwish. Nothing wrong with that - heck, we got classical music that's been around for x centuries that still gets played. It's just that when I look to what's new today, I like to see stuff that's, you know, new. When I clicked on that link, I didn't expect to see flinging hair, chord progression and general posing that's straight out of 80's hair bands, that's all. Again, nothing wrong with that, just a bit funny if you're not prepared for that.

While the videos linked to are 'ugh-inducing' the difference musically between the bands, and the genres, is pretty apparent, IMO. I'm never going to hear a Ratt or Cinderella song and get it confused w/Blind Guardian or Helloween. While all bands that fall under the metal umbrella will share some basic characteristics that doesn't mean the differences between them aren't evident. I mean, Megadeth, Type O Negative, and Children of Bodom are all 'metal' but each has a very different sound. While I'm not one to get obsessed w/dropping bands into specific genres such as symphonic, power, gothic, black, doom, death, speed, thrash, melodic, epic, nu, hair, prog or straight up regular metal there are differences even if one doesn't care to recognize them. To me all country music pretty much sounds the same. To the general public all cameras are the same. How many geek-fights break out debating the difference between Avid and FCP or the HVX200 and EX-1 or RED and Everything Else? I guess the size of the difference depends on how closely one wants to look.

Also, as you can from the pic I posted Nightwish only has one chic in the band. The 'all chic' version of the band in the Bye Bye Beautiful video is a dig at their former singer.

Well, whatever floats your boat, it's all good as far as I'm concerned. There's no sense in playing the "your favorite band sucks" game. I mean, if it brings joy and happiness, it gets a thumbs up from me.

My point was different. I just found it funny, cause I think of DVXuser as a pretty hep place full of hep cats. So when I click on a link to some band, I'm expecting something new, fresh, or otherwise outstanding. When I clicked on this, what do I get, but a re-hash of the most banal tropes from 80's hair bands. So I burst out laughing, just an involuntary reaction, and in my enthusiasm I posted, that's all. And yes, I get that there are "differences", like I said in my other post. Except you know, it's huge "differences" for insiders, but to outsiders it's a bit abstruse. Here's an anecdote for you. I had some mutual friends from France visit LA some years ago. A good buddy of mine, took them around LA on a "culinary journey" since they heard so much about how varied the cuisine is here with restaurants from all over the world and whatnot. Anyhow, he took them the first day breakfast, lunch, and dinner, second day the same and so on. By the end of the week it was my turn. The poor Frenchies were looking kinda green around the gills. I asked what was up. Well, it transpired my buddy took them for a burgers the first day... and then for burgers the second day, and then burgers the third day and so on. I laughed really hard cause I understood what happened. See, my buddy is a good all-american guy. To him, there are huge differences between a burger from In-n-out, Tommy's, Wendy's, etc., etc., etc., and he figured that's what American food is famous for: burgers, and the Frenchies would appreciate the Americana. Heck, remember QT and the discussion of the fine difference between burgers in the states and Europe? All understandable - except to the French, a burger was, you know, a burger. They were thinking more of "burger, Peruvian food, Australian, Mongolian Cuisine, etc.".

Same with music - suuuuuure there are "differences" between the various shades of eyeliner between the various styles of metal and what not, but you know, when your expectations are for something truly new and inspired and original, and then you're served up stuff that's right at home in the 80's and it was already lame back then, you burst out laughing. That's all. But again, as long as it works for someone, more power to 'em.

I guess I'm late for the conversation... but I'd never heard of them.

And after listening to that, I wish it were still the case.:zombie_smiley:

Not my cup 'o tea I guess.

I love there song, The Islander. Inspirational stuff. Sympthonic Rock / Metal is my kind of thing.

Think I only listen to Nightwish and Film scores.. I need to get out more.

- - Yeah those songs in the first post may not be to everyones cup of tea, there are more various tracks out there of what I guess I would call a different genre. Those were just the two I was listening at the time. I think 'Nemo' and 'Amaranth' are the most popular. I could be wrong.

If you were looking for something so original it makes time stand still while an angelic choir descends from the skies above then I agree that Nightwish will be disappointing. But for what they are they are solid, IMO, although a distinctive part of their sound was lost when they dumped their former singer (a classically trained female opera singer).

And yes, I get that there are "differences", like I said in my other post. Except you know, it's huge "differences" for insiders, but to outsiders it's a bit abstruse.
There are differences between the metal sub-genres (real differences not pretend, superficial, different but not really 'differences') and if you aren't experienced enough in the genre to recognize that that's cool 'cause not everyone needs to be an expert. But discounting the fact that there are differences between to people that are knowledgeable enough to recognize the differences is a bit irritating and insulting. Incase you are wondering you have ventured into Pet Peeve territory of mine. :)

Metal, as a genre, typically gets discounted as a bunch of knuckle dragging, baby killing rapists violently banging on their instruments and screaming unintelligible, satan loving, little-johnny-why-don't-you-go-kill-your-parents-then-off-yourself lyrics into the microphone and while some bands do come close to that stereotype the genre is much broader than that. You have everything from the very pop-centric Hair Metal bands to Nu-metal (which incorporates elements of rap) to whiplash inducing Thrash Metal to Power Metal featuring clean vocals, harmony, melody, and song structure that is similar to classical music. Lyrical content, which can also help differentiate between sub-genres, ranges from necrophilia, to anti-war, to mythical/fantasy stories.

So, long story short, it can put a bur under my saddle when someone says all metal is the same when, if you take the time to explore the genre, it clearly is not.

lone.smuggler,
If you like the big, epic sounding stuff definitely check out Blind Guardian if you haven't already. Personally I'd recommend the albums Nightfall in Middle Earth (a concept album based on The Silmarillion) and A Night at the Opera.
