Nightmare on P2 Street

OK so I shoot some footage in 24pn them added it to the P2 Store...then I put it into FCP in a HD720 24p timeline. It plays fine on my Mac G4 167mh laptop.

But when I firewired her to a AJ1200A deck my audio would not go with it, but rather a ticking sound instead. Picture was there but a ticking sound for audio. My computer also had a tendancy to drop frames only when connected to the deck.

Could my problem be that I shot in 24pn or what. This has been a gigantic headache making me hate P2.

Basically I am going out to DVC pro via the deck so it can be archived in HD and also be downconverted to Digi Beta.

Where am I going wrong in this process.

I even tried outputing a NTSC 29.97 version to lay out to Digi Beta but that even posed a problem because I have to render it all out because 960 x 720 is not native to and SD timeline.

Can we just go back to shooting film please?

Thanks.

I feel your pain in regards to some of the technological hurdles associated with the HVX 200. Don't give up on it just yet though. Remember at how new it is and how new the workflows for it are. If you read this forum you'll see how often a 'new scenario' keeps popping up right now. Its just a new technology that is slowly building up its support network and FAQ lists.

As for going to the AJ-1200, rather curious where your problem is occuring. With our primary camera the Varicam, and our post workflow being offline and then online, I transfer all HVX 200 footage to DVC Pro DP 121's so I can maintain the offline workflow for the HVX 200 footage. I've not had to do many tapes as of yet, but so far all have gone on without a hitch. We too are shooting at 720/24pN and have been fine taking that to tape. Have you had any successful ones for you or has the audio issue been there right from the get go? The audio appears fine in all other instances (going audio out to mixer/monitor, the headphone out, in the FCP processed MOVs)?

And being that the picture seems to be going over okay I don't know it would help much but...have you tried using a different firewire cable or have you tried using the firewire aspect of the deck for another function (like just a digitizing of a tape from another project)? Perhaps there is a hardware flaw in the firewire flow somewhere?

cheers.

...and is that Powerbook fast enough to stream the HD over Firewire? I did successfully with a Dual 1.25GHz G4 Tower, but that was just barely getting by.

Good point. Unless it's a 7200 rpm drive that set up may be a no go.
