Nightclub Filming

Hi DVXUSER,

I'm totally new to the world of filming. Held a camera once in my life.

In any case, some things came up, some big-future opportunities (you know how it is) and all of a sudden a camera is required.

I followed this forum (and a few other forums) and didn't find what I was looking for. I also see that this is a highly active forum so I hope that through the knowledge that is here I will find what I am looking for.

So this is what I need to find out

This is the video that hopefully will give you some clues on what I want to have http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Trn_A4N8lQo

(please watch it in HQ)

1. The most general question, what kind of camera should I use for nightclubs to achieve the results that are in the video? I do realize that the question is quite general and really hard to answer but please try. I'm debating between making it 'YouTube' quality or HD quality, what is the price range between the two? ... and what kind of camera do I need for that kind of stuff in general?

2. Im guessing they attach some sort of light to the camera? Or do you think its that bright at the club? I doubt it... so if you use a light, what kind of light should you use?

3. Also, how in every reality TV show they get those 'walkie-talkie-like-microphones' one end is attached to the belt (the brick) and the other end is a microphone? Can you sync that with any camera? And.. how do you sync it? .. What are the prices for those things?

And in general any other tips and stuff would be appriciated.

If you need any other information, I will be ready to help.

Thank you so much.

I've managed to get a picture from a video

Here it is...

Anyone can take a wild guess?

the camera in that picture looks like the sony z1u and the light on top of it could be an elipz?

if you're using just available light in a night club, you'll be hard pressed to find any prosumer level camera that will pick up a decent image without considerable noise.

on the flip side, you could go with a DSLR camera such as the Canon Mark II or Nikon D90 that has a much better low light response due to its large image sensors.

IMO using the available light inside of a nightclub will look way cooler (and more natural!) just check out this video and you'll see what i mean.

P.S. those Sony Z1U run at around $5000, cute toys.

EDIT: Is there an actual camera that can produce the same effect as the 5D MarkII ?

Not a video camera. The Nikon D90 and the Panasonic GH1 are two other SLRs which will probably get close the the 5D mkII. The reason that the 5D is so amazing in low light is because of the sheer size of its sensor. The larger the sensor, the larger the photosites and the more light which is collected. It also has the advantage of interchangeable lenses so you can use really 'fast' lenses to get even better results.

What about

Canon DC220 DVD Camcorder
JVC GZ-MF50U Everio-G Kit
Sony DCR-HC7 HD Camcorder
Sanyo Xacti HD-1000
Panasonic VGS500 Camcorder
Sony HDR-SR7 AVCHD Camcorder
Sony DCR-HC1000 3CCD Mini DVD Kit
Sony HDR-FX1 HD Mini DV
Canon XL2 3CCD
Sony CCD TRV 138 Hi-8 Camcorder
Sony VRD-MC3 DVD Direcr DVD Recorder

No consumer camcorder will have the low light performance of a DSLR. As previously stated. The DSLR contenders are
D90
GH1
Mark II.

Hmm is it possible to sync the D90 with a microphone somehow?

Like if we are inside the club, and we are talking and stuff... (by microphone I mean the one that is attached to your body, the little one)

I'm 90% sure that the d90 does NOT have a microphone input so you wouldnt be able to record from an external mic source.

the sony pd150 was hailed for its low light performance back in the day (its standard def).

but again, like i said earlier, no prosumer level camcoder will come close to matching the low-light performance of a DLSR.

and yes, it is a digital camera meant primarily for stills. but technology allows for HD video in these bad boys. think of the Mark II as a really, really, slimmed down RED camera.

also, what is your price range? and in what kind of conditions will you be shooting in? (always night-time stuff, clubs?) if your looking to spend a couple thousand already on a prosumer level camera, you should seriously consider the DSLR market. however, there are drawbacks with any set-up, in this case: pro-audio inputs, rolling shutter/jello effect, ergonomics, weight, etc.

as far as audio is concerned, you should be able to 'clap-in' with a visual marker, i.e. - your hands (not preferable) here is a thread regarding the issue:

hey longshanks, thanks for the really long reply!

Yeah, I guess I should of gave a bit more detail, etc.

Well I was on YouTube for about an hour now, looking for the best possible video to find on what kind of expectations I want

and the best one I can find is this

Of course there is NO way in the world on telling what kind of camera it is, but that is the set up I am looking for. A camera that can shoot in the light, I don't need anything fency because the videos will be uploaded onto YouTube, and since YouTube like 95% of the YouTube-ers watch everything in Standard and not in HQ then there is really no point of getting a really kick-ass camera if no one will watch it in good quality anyways.

So yeah, something like that.

And I was thinking of a DSLR, but I really want to have a 'normal' effect, rather then a nightclub effect. Since the nightclub effect with the DSLR is more darker, etc. While I want to concentrate on the people, there faces, etc

Hope this helps
