NHL 2007-2008 Thread

And on a side note, I shot a video for a contest to win some wings tickets... but I can't post it until the contest is over... we basically made a red wings cake and threw it at my friend who is an Avs fan.

Awesome.

Well, after another disaster of a year in Maple Leaf land, I'm glad that that season finally ended on Saturday night, ugghhh, 42 years without a cup and 4 years since we last played a playoff game. Hopefully some of the moves we made half through the year will turn the team in the right direction, expecting big moves this offseason.

Man, has Montreal been a huge surprise and Ottawa also, I would have never predicted Montreal to be in first and Ottawa to just barely make the playoffs.

Pittsburgh Vs Ottawa is going to be a good series, but from the way The Senators have played (basically since November) I don't see them doing any damage, Pens in 6.

Montreal Vs Boston, considering Montreal has beaten Boston 8 straight this year and something like 24 outta the last 27 games, I don't see Boston doing anything, Montreal in 5.

Washington Vs Flyers, Watching Ovechkin and the Caps make the playoffs is a pleasant surprise and one I'm sure the head office is probably extremly happy about, Ovechkin has been awesome to watch. With the Caps on a role, I think they got a shot at beating Philly, going to be tough though. Caps in 7

New York Vs New Jersey, The Rangers had a tough time this year getting going, but the played the Devils really well, I think they will take this series in 6.

Detroit Vs Nashville, For Nashville to make the playoffs is a huge feat considering they are playing with the lowest cap numbers at the minumum of 35M (they actually had to buy someones contract from another team, just to make it over the minimum cap number), so making the playoffs is huge, too bad their playing the Wings though, Detroit in 6.

San Jose Vs Calgary, I think this could be a closer series than a lot are predicting, It could go either way, depends on how well Kipprusof plays, Calgary won the season series 3 to 4. San Jose in 7 though.

Minnesota Vs Colorado, Colorado made a big effort to rekindle their old team at the deadline, if they come out and try and play a run and gun game against the Wild, they will be badly burned. Minnesota has stuggled in the playoffs in recent years and Colorado has got veteran team that has been there before. I'd say this comes down to Goaltending, Theodore needs to be great, not average. Colorado in 7.

Anahiem vs Dallas, Dallas is in trouble here, there going to have trouble getting past the Ducks big three D (Pronger, Niedermyer and Schnieder), lots of veteran precense on the Ducks. Anahiem in 6.

We should start a DVXuser playoff pool, if we got enough interest.
If not, I've got a few spots left open on my hockey pool if anyone is interested in joining. Let me know.

Also, I wish the would schedule NAB for this week, always falls right when the playoffs start.

But then, I am from Colorado!

Welp, since my CBJ flopped again this year (only after the AS Break), I think I am going to root for the Ducks the rest of the way - I am picking Anaheim vs. NJD in the Finals. The Ducks have the talent, and a good matchup with potential opponents. Any of the rest of you making any predictions?

With Alfredsson and Fisher out (thanks leafs!) I don't think the Sens stand a chance against the Penquins.

Although, since the Penquins threw their last season game in order to play the Sens instead of Philly... I hope it comes back to bite them in the Ass! :D

Anyone who watched that last game between the Pens and Philly knows what I'm talking about.

I watched most of it, it didn't seem at all like they were throwing the game.

And yeah, Mark Bell walloped Alfredson. Even if both Fisher and he were back, I doubt Ottawa would stand a chance, they've been playing terrible since November.

LOL! They sat a healthy Crosby, had 20 shots the entire game even though they had about 8 Powerplays and played guys on the PP that they normally don't.

Looked so obvious that the commentators brought it up on numerous occasions during the live broadcast. Especially when Malkin just let the puck go by him along the boards and didn't even attempt to stop the Philly forward from taking it and skating down the ice. It was laughable.

Smart move though IMHO. But obvious...

As for the Sens, they would have a chance with Alfie and Fisher in the lineup.

Hell, even you predicted a 6 game series without them.

The sat Crosby because he's had ankle problems all year and he has been in and out of the lineup, no point in playing him if there's a chance he could get hurt when really there's nothing for Pittsburgh to gain, espcially against Philly.

I think a lot of what Bryan Murray said was to try and get something started and get his team going, I honestly think it's stupid to do so, cos Pittsburgh is going to bring it.

With Alfredson and Fisher in the lineup I still would have called it a 6 game series. Ottawa went like 16-3 to start the season, since then their winning % has been like the third lowest in the league, there not the same team as last year, they win one game and lose 2. Had they not gotten off to such a great start, they would have never of made the playoffs and they just barely did (although at least they can make the playoffs.......sigh).

Who do you see as the team to beat in the East and West?

Crosby is fine. I'm a big fan of his. He himself said he was 100%.
I'm not going by what Murray said, I'm going by what I saw and what every announcer/sports reporter has alluded to. They threw that game.

I don't blame them. Who would you rather play this year if you could control your destiny by losing one game? Ottawa or Philly? No brainer...

As for your prediction of six games... I predict Pens in 5. With Alfredsson they would stand more of a chance. They play well against Pittsburgh, but without one of the best players in the league and Fisher to boot... no chance.

Gerber would have to catch fire to steal this series. Fingers crossed.

Points are points and Ottawa made it in the playoffs once again. I believe only Detroit holds such a great playoff streak.

I like the look of Montreal and San Jose. They should go far.

As a Leafs fan, I would want to face Ottawa, based on the fact that we play you guys really well this year, I think the season series was pretty much split, also, we never lose against the Sens in the playoffs.

Question, Do you think Melnyk is going to freak and fire Murray if the Sens are eliminated in the first round? Something is up with that team, you don't go from the team they were last year to this and it's basically the same team.

Montreal was such a huge surprise, I still can't believe they won the East, I guess Kovalev decided to show up this year.

San Jose has got some question marks around them, but if Thornton gets going and Nabakov gets hot then, they may be tough.

When they make it... which hasn't been in a while.
As for past history, it's easy to win a cup when you have a 1 in 6 chance. They haven't had those odds in over 4 decades and look what's happened. Stop living in the past.

In the here and now... the Sens are a regular playoff attendee.
Although a weak one this year.

I have a huge problem with the fact that they changed coaching and GM positions after making the Stanley Cup Finals. They did not need to change that much.

It wasn't surprising to me. They have been getting their act together and made some really good long term moves. It takes time when you do it right.

PS- Just some friendly Sens/Leaf rivalry. No hard feelings.
I actually used to like the Leafs back when there were no Sens team to cheer for. They haven't been much to look at since the Potvin/Clark/Gilmour days IMHO.

Hopefully they can clean house and get things back on track.

Of course, no hard feelings at all. This site I find is great for that, there is never any pissing matches, even when we do talk about sports, most people treat each other with a lot of respect and thats hard to find on forums.

Yeah I agree, I really thought they put a lot of unwanted attention on them from the media when the Murray/Muckler power struggle was going on, they basically just missed out on the cup and a few weeks later they canned their GM, I didn't really understand that. Murray takes over and hires Paddock and then fires him with like month or so to go in the season. They would have been a lot better off had kept things the same as they were, as soon as Muckler firing went down, it's been one shitstorm after the next in Media. Also, what the hell was/is Ray Emery doing, I think a lot of the players really were pissed of that he put himself above the team and that created a lot of problems behind closed doors.

Before the season, I think I predicted Montreal to finish 10th, haha, I was right on there.

Hopefully they can clean house and get things back on track.

Yeah, it looks like things are going in the right direction. It's tough though for the board to care about the team, because all they care about is making money and the Leafs will sell out every game and sell tons of Leafs **** regardless of what position they are in. I think this year though there was a lot of pressure based on the fact that there wasn't that playoff revenue for the third consecutive year, but when your posting records profits for the owners (a pension fund) than who really cares, I think that mentallity is what they had in previous years, but the public outcry that came half way through the season kinda woke them up, people will eventually stop caring and they will lose some money (not much, but some) and that's all they really care about.

I also think that the Penguins can go far this post season as long Fleury keeps his head in the game.

I totally agree with you on the Muckler/Emery situations. Very strange.

As for the Leafs... I think they will get things on track. Sometime you have to feel like you've hit bottom before things can change. I expect a much better Leafs team next season. I also expect a better Ottawa team as well.

Murray may be in trouble if the Sens tank in the playoffs. Things are not looking good in his favour.

My problem is that I like a lot of individual players on different teams. Sure, I'm a Sens fan. But I wouldn't mind seeing Crosby and the boys do well, or Montreal for that matter.

Blasphemy, I know.
