NHL 2007-2008 Thread

I meant to make this thread back in early October, forgot about.

Anyways, anyone on here following any hockey? I know Horse is a Wild fan, you guys got off to a quick start, playing some pretty good hockey. Do you find it boring though watching a defensive game that Lemaire implements? Demitra on the IR, Gaborik and him cannot catch a break.

I'm a Leafs fans, would have liked a better start to the season.

I don't get bored at all watcing the way the Wild play. A few weeks ago, I was watching the Penguins/Rangers game and I was getting pissed off watching how many odd man rushes the Rangers were giving up. That would drive me nuts if I saw the Wild doing that. Maybe I'm just used to a defensive style after watching it for so long.

Once Gabby and Demitra get healthy, I think we'll be back on track, but who knows when that's going to happen? The team is playing fairly well, just not burying the puck when they need to. Gaborik is supposed to be back tonight, so we'll see how he is.

What do you think the problem is with your squad right now?

I used to watch hockey alot, and would always be up for a Leaf's game.

My father used to complain that the team was poorly managed, cut corners on the ice, and took the fans for granted. His argument was that decades pass, but nothing really changes, and that there was no incentive for the franshice to spend money on building a winner when the games were always sold out no matter how bad the team did. It used to always tick me off when he said stuff that.

Now, for the last couple of years, I actually think he was right.

So much for the wunderkind, John Ferguson...now there is talk of Glenn Healy running the show.

I try to keep up on it when I can. Near Detroit I'm naturally a Wings fan... to bad thier schedule is so whack... barely any original 6 matchups! I used to love it when they would play a home and home series with the Leafs.

Were playing a man to man game and its something that teams don't normally play anymore, its ended up in a lot of blown coverages and odd man rushes. The offense is there, were 2nd in the league for goals but close to last for goals against, so while that kinda points to the goaltending, its more aimed at our overall team defense, goalies can only do so much and if your giving up that many chances over and over again eventually their going to get scored on. The past 3-4 games I thought we've played a lot better and used more of defensive system instead of playing man to man, it seems to be working, were just getting some tough breaks, 7-7-5, lost in the shootout/OT a couple of times otherwise things could be pretty good right now, regardless, I think were playing okay, just need to be more consistent overall.

I think I'd get used to it eventually. Boston kind of plays that way or at least they did last year (We play them tonight for the first time), and I found it extremely boring, but if it results in winning then I'd be all for it. New Jersey is very similar and has been consistent for years.

You just played the Pens a week or so ago right? What you think of Crosby?

Thankfully this is going to be the last year the NHL is using this ridiculous schedule, playing 32 games against your division is stupid. Every team should play each other at least once a year, we don't get to come out and play Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver this year. Those are great rivalries.

I hear you on that. Healy would be the worst GM ever and the worst decision ever, (which probably means that we'll do it). If MLSE ever saw a drop in revenue they may actually start to realize that they need to put forth a better effort managing the team, sadly, thats not going to happen, you can buy everything from maple leafs dog raincoats to pool tables.

I was pretty young through the Ballard years so I can only imagine how the fans felt, I think hes probably one of the most hated men in Toronto history, purposely putting together bad teams to save money meanwhile raking it in.

I know, I can't tell you how much I hate the schedule, Leafs vs Red Wings were always great games, not to mention one of my favourite playoff moments ever when we upset the Wings in 93.

I think he's scary enough now, I can't even imagine how good he's gonna be in a few years. The kid just makes things happen.

Yeah, his burned us a bunch too, actually he burns everyone. My only knock on him is his a bit yappy and whines quite a bit to the refs, however he is only 20 and is the captain of the team. Pittsburgh has goaltending and defence issues, the rest is there, I'd say in the next couple of years they'll be ready for a cup.

I agree.

Everyone should list some of their favorite players from their favorite team. Include video links, if available. It'll help everyone get to know some of the players in the league that don't necessarily grab a ton of headlines. With the messed up schedule, I don't get much of a chance to see many of the players in the Eastern Conference.

Les Habitants, are looking pretty good so far this year and Kovalev looks like hes decided to show up.

Horse,

Read this earlier, thought it was pretty funny.

Sportsnet.ca -- In an unprecedented move, Minnesota Wild forward Marian Gaborik has apologized to fantasy hockey owners for playing in a defensive system.

"When developing this team it is obvious that management paid no attention to fantasy owners, but instead selfishly decided that winning games was more important," Gaborik said in a "prepared statement."

The Slovak scorer has 13 points in 12 games this season, including a game-winning goal against the Calgary Flames. For his efforts the Wild are off to a 9-6-2 start, but fantasy owners are frustrated that Gaborik is not a Top 5 in every offensive category.

"I will continue to help you out when I can," Gaborik explained. "But I am afraid management is obsessed with giving Minnesota fans a Stanley Cup."

Gaborik will continue to do his best in Edmonton on Thursday night as the Wild visit the Oilers.

Aboot time we start talkin' boot some hockey here, eh? Youbetcha. Don't laugh - I'm a HUGE CBJ fan. What can I say? They're close, and I work TV for all of their games. Not looking too shabby this year.

I know what you guys are saying about the crazy schedules - I'm not a huge fan of the 'New NHL' scheduling, where they play each team in their Div 8 times a season. It seems like we're always playing one of those teams, and hardly ever get to see teams from the other Conference! It'd be so awesome to see Detroit play Toronto or NYR a couple times a year. Or heck, for the CBJ to play the Pens once or twice a year - I mean, we're only 2 hours away!

Any of you guys play hockey?

Columbus got off to a surprising start, playing really well. Rick Nash is a monster and Leclere is playing great, something like 5 shutouts.

It's about time he show up Kovalev, why they are not paying the players by there performances. He's the first since Lafleur who can really lift the crowd, but goaltenders are still the real Canadiens forces, from what I read because I didn't saw any of the game this year so far.

That's the best thing ever!

What's funny is that Gaborik is pretty much the only guy who can get away with playing a more wide open game. Lemaire would kill anybody else on the team if they did some of the things that he does.

Kovalev will start to not care again. Yeah, Carey Price is going to be a very good goaltender, hes already on his way. Montreal has always drafted goalies very well.

Hey Horse, you watch the Wild Vs Canucks on Friday? What did you think about that slash that Ohlund gave to Koivu? Pretty nasty in my opinion. 4 Games isn't much considering the time that Koivu is going to miss with a cracked fibula, however Ohlund has never been suspended before so that factors into it.

I missed it. It was on a channel that my cable company doesn't carry (yet, the Wild are working on something). I've seen plenty of replays, though. That was pretty violent. I'm looking forward to Wednesday's rematch. I have a feeling Boogaard could be a busy guy that night.

Just when you think the Wild are starting to get almost healthy, they lose another of their top players. I don't know if you've seen much of Mikko, but he's turning into a damn good center. He's got a bright future.
