Orson Welles on Grips, etc...
Welles: The man who pushes the camera, those who change the lights, the one who handles the crane -- they have children at the university. You are side by side with men who don't feel themselves to be workers but who think of themselves as very capable and well paid craftsmen. That makes an enormous difference; enormous.
I could never have done what I did on Touch of Evil elsewhere [than America]. And it is not only a question of technique; it essentially concerns the human competence of the men with whom I worked. All this stems from the economic security they enjoy, from the fact that they are well paid....
... the great advantage in America is that, at times, you find directors who are less learned than the man who pushes the camera.... The pleasure one experiences working with an American crew is something that has no equivalent on earth. But you pay a price for that. There are the producers, and that group is as bad as the technicians are good.
In America, [the crane operator] is educated and considers himself as important to the film as the cameraman himself. In that scene in Marcia's house [in The Trial], there are about 60 chalk marks on the ground: that tells you how knowledgeable and intelligent the man who guides the camera must be in order to do well. At that moment, I am at his mercy, at the mercy of his precision. If he can't do it with assurance, the scene is impossible.
-- An interview with Welles taken from "Hollywood Voices", edited by Andrew Sarris.

We are having an event I thought your group might be intrested in, and wanted to ask you if you would like to tell the other members of the group about it. It's basically saying if you know how to edit Video, you can edit Audio. and vice versa. Eric Druker from lowell is going to talk about green screen lighting as well. Basically we are going to shoot and edit a music video on a green screen during the event. herer is a link to the details

Great idea on Smuggler's ransom! So you would actually take a flight just to come screen the film with us? Afterwards we all could go to Dave & Busters in play some games and relax! Someone set this up![]()
