C200: Next NLE for C200

My Next NLE would depends of which company release support for c200 RAW light. The Last few months I'm seriously considering for the first time switching to FCPX or Davinci Resolve 14 (I used this for CC but seem they are pretty serious now to be a full feature NLE too)

I recalled Premiere took almost a year to finally support Red DSCM2 Cameras so I'm not holding my breath for Canon new Cine RAW light to be supported any time soon.

I'm not sure if is me but I'm really tired of Premiere CC crashing all the time and updating the software at the end they are fixing one thing and damaging two. I'm lucky that my CC renewal is due on September.

What is your experience?

I started using Avid in 1997 because it was the only NLE that worked with my Sony Digital 8 Camcorder, not kidding. It's the same software now as it was then.

With Premiere/FCPX/Resolve, every update comes with a new, BIG, attention grabbing feature set... and subsequently, they change a lot of things around.

I hate Avid. HATE! And I use it almost every day. I wish Blackmagic would buy it and integrate it with Resolve.

Premiere is nice and easy to use and I wish they would slow down a little sometimes. I don't have a lot of time to learn all the cool new features every 5-6 months.

That being said, I hope there isn't a 'new NLE'. I need to be able to sit down and get to work without any complications. Hopefully, it will just be a minor update.

I love the Proxy workflow in Premiere!

I use FCPX and personally I don't think there are any other NLEs that can touch it in terms of speed.

In the beginning I though FCPX was garbage, because it was, but now that they have added a lot of the missing features, and streamlined/fixed a lot of things, and now I have no interest in using anything else.

I have no doubt Apple will add C-RAW support soon, they seem to be pretty good about supporting new cameras.

The magnetic timeline works pretty well when your working on narrative projects, but if you don't like it, all you have to do is throw a piece of black video on it and then put your video above it and your audio below it and it handles just like any NLE.

But the speed with rendering and exporting is what blows my mind every time I use it.

Being able to export 45 minute sequences in about 5 minutes makes it hard to go to anything else.

With that said, Resolve 14 looks pretty impressive as well and it seems like BMD is committed to supporting it.

I would like to love FCPX but honestly I find hard to belive there is not support for H.264 and H.265 and everything shoot with that codec (Gh4-Fs7-Fs5-Gh5-A7sII and Long Etc) needs to be transcode.

I think Premiere CC is very stable is you only use ProRes Files too.

FCPX supports H.264... But the codec uses more processing power to decode on the fly than ProRes (on any NLE). If you have a fast machine you can just drop the footage in and edit, no transcoding required.

Yup, I use H.264 footage all the time, zero issues. I haven't tested H.265 though, so I'm not sure on that.

Love how well FCPX handles just about anything you throw at it. However, I have tried H.265 and it was a no-go. From what I understand, H.265 support will come for Mac OS this fall with High Sierra.

No idea about H.265 as I don't use it. However, FCPX handles H.264 well. It also has a nice proxy workflow. You can generate proxies while importing your main files and work on those. Love how fast FCPx has improved. It is fast. Even FCPX handles the RED codec well. So I have no doubt that the C200 RAW light will come soon. Wish it was done by this time.

I ended up at Grass Valley Edius after getting tired of early versions of Premiere Pro's stability and I've never looked back. I can edit h264 files on my surface pro and Edius is fast and stable. In fact it's the fastest and most stable editing program I've ever used and I find myself amazed that more people haven't tried it. It'll edit everything(well almost, no c200 support yet but it's coming) without a hitch and I've never felt it's missing any features that I need. It's definitely worth a try.

Resolve 14 on the same machine is slllloooooowwww in comparison to Edius working on the same files.

John.
