Next generation F3

I think most of us are pleased with what the camera can do. Concern over the longevity of the camera in the market place shouldn't be misconstrued as mere pixel-peeping on the part of owner-operators. I'd love to be in a position where I could ignore the fickle nature of the present market, I enjoy and value the process of learning to get the most out of my tools over a period of time. Thats why I bought the camera. But for most of us, realistically, it's not quite as simple as that.

IBC announcements from Sony appear to be coming tomorrow, on Sept 7th.

I think we can expect a spate of announcements tomorrow.

It'd be really early to replace the F3 - it only premiered in February 2011. If they complement it with a more shoulder mount big brother, that might work. If they do add another camera in the F3's range, I hope it shares the same FZ mount, and compatability with those lenses and adapters.

I don't think I'll be trading out cameras quickly - the one I have is working fine for clients.

I would imagine you dead on, they will probably make something that fits between the F65, and the F3. I dont currently own a camera I have been waiting for the right one, that is in a good price range for me to own it as well as a set of cooke panchro lenses.
No matter what they do launch your F3 will be just as viable of a camera. I wouldn't swap it out if I had already owned one.

Cheers,

Graham

The more I shoot with my F3 the more I love it. Unless sony releases a camera which makes espresso and wipes the carpets in my house, I don't see any reason to buy a new camera :)

Knowing Sony it will be a 4k sensor only shooting up to 30fps, require ext. recorder like the Sony SR-1, and record internally to some whacked codec in 8-bit 420...

...and the VF will be under the camera near the plate mount ;)

Seems strange that they would embargo until Sep 8. Most companies do their press releases on the first day of the show to get people talking and visiting their booth.

But I know Ned knows more than we do, so let's wait and see.

Maybe that's exactly why they did it. After everyone's barraged you with press releases on the first day, what else is there to talk about? Well, how about a new barrage on the second day? If that's their strategy, they may be able to dominate the 2nd-day news cycle and have it all to themselves...

Well if C500 exists then Sony F5 probably will too.

But if C500 is ~$30k, F5 will be $20'ish k.. and I'm MORE than certain will require ext. recorder. That price "could" make it prohibitive, especially when you can buy a used RED camera with bits for less...

But still, RED and Sony (and Canon) cameras are far from the same in terms of post workflow.

***EDIT: this thread says $25,999.

^ roughly how much patience Ned? hahah 1 month, 1 year hahah.

And to comment on Red cameras being cheaper. They might be but not by much, and lately Red has driven me crazy. I shot a car commercial recently we were doing crane car work, we shot with this production companies scarlet's 1 as our crane car camera and one as a backup. We shot a bunch of rehearsal footage during the day then when magic hour rolled around we were going to pop off the shots with the nice lighting. No issues all day, but when we delivered the first drive of the magic hour footage to our DIT, 80 percent of it had 6 lines of dead pixels right down the center of the frame hahah. Our VFX guys created a plugin that blended frames and saved the bulk of the footage that had dead pixels but when we took it to Red and told them what happened, they "fixed our camera" Ie, reformatted our drives, and reinstalled the firmware... and handed it back. A week later we had similar dead pixel issues on another luckily smaller shoot. Not cool considering each shot with a crane car on a commercial like that costs about 2000 bucks and their camera wrecked about 13 of them.

Therefore I am really hoping Sony delivers a new camera soon, because I have a few spots coming up I would love to use it on!

Cheers,
Graham
