how many people would freak out if I opened up the next DVXfest to Canon users?
Bring it on! IMO, the more different brands of cameras the better! I'm entering with that "renegade" Sony DSR450, remember?
Adds another dimension to the whole competition thing, I think. The cool thing about these fests is that "creativity" is what levels the playing field here, not "pixel-counts."

I'm game on a little spy action music. Perhaps it'll give me a reason to bite my chops at something completely new and unique and redefine the spy genre. Hell, I'm looking to do that with my own movie, but ya know... "Porky's" has already be done and perfected. :\

Ralph/Rez... definitely count me in! I want to be involved with your film too so whenever you ready let's hit up some coffee and jam it out.

Brandon. You got it! Smuggler's Ransom score with a twist. :) (hopefully you'll nail down at least one film and stick to it)

cheers!

I know, I know... I need to do a short this time! I hope you're still up for the sci-fi thriller feature later this year too :thumbsup: Man, I can't wait to work with ya again!

I hope, that if other cameras are going to be eligible to compete, that votes aren't swayed depending on what camera was used.

It might just be a good idea to keep what camera you used under wraps all together. Then again, maybe that won't matter!

Cool, man! Coffee Bean: Robertson + Beverly [lots of eye candy]. Coffee Bean Main St., Santa Monica [lots of eye candy]. Coffee Bean Sunset Blvd. next to Tower Records [they have a fireplace and they're open until midnight].

I think the camera issue is Moot. But there should be a rule where it states, you cannot state what camera youre shooting on, this way there can be no, "Canon" "panasonic" "sony" biases.

EYEcandy=Good.

I know its stupid, but as long as it's before all rush hour traffic. Bleh. I hate traffic and I can only talk to myself for so long while sitting in it before going mad.

THat's what I was pretty much getting at. If it's going to be open fest, you shouldn't be allowed to tell what camera you used until after the fest.

So who's game for this one?

I guess there's a wide range if you think about it. There can be comedy or action in it.

I have written one of the greatest five page comedy scripts ever so I would very much like to do comedy. Comedy is a great genre because it emphasizes writing, performance, and editing more than cinematography and music, which seem to be what all the entries so far in this competition have relied on. Great comedies are also traditionally low budget (like horror) so, unlike action, they are about skill and concept over execution. But you can make a comedy look great, too, and visual puns are always the best, so I really think it's ideal. It's the most natural genre save only for horror for such a competition as this.

I don't know about the camera thing, though. If you have access to a much better camera, it's a real advantage. This whole contest is about the low budget aesthetic and making do with what you have, so if people are shooting with more expensive cameras (especially new 2k and 4k digital cinema cameras that some people seem to be buying, but even 2/3'' SD cameras), that could pose a real problem. Even the hvx has an inherent advantage in being able to record at multiple frame rates. I can even see some people shooting on Super 16...which would just be unfair.

I have really mixed feelings about allowing other cameras - especially if you plan to limit it to only one other mfg's wares.

If you make it open-brand, you're making it open-format by extension. That means I can use ostensibly use a VariCam or another filmmaker can bring his new XDCam to the contest.

At that point, I wonder what the goal of DVXUser festivals would be? Just another festival.

BTW, I'm really excited about SPYFest!

the camera has little to do with the qualiy of work here.

Easy to say because everyone's using roughly the same camera. Throw some 1CCD MiniDV's in and a few Red cameras and things may be different; we'll get more junk entries and a few fantastic ones that just push everything else aside. A better camera also allows for better greenscreen work, color grading, etc.

I agree 100% with Overland. Maybe allow any camera under $5,000 or something? After a while you just wonder what's the point?

How about limiting it to 1/3" cameras for competition, but all open for other formats / factors in exhibition only?

Believe me, having fought all weekend long with the HVX's infinite DOF (often at F2.0), I would much prefer to utilize the Canon eHD glass on a 1/2 or 2/3 HDV or HDCam CineAlta for the competition. I'm sure some members would love to enter their new SI2ks as well. Where does it all stop?

I think the fest should be open to all dvxusers, despite their cameras. It's not the camera that's going to make or break the short film, it's the screenplay and the execution of that screenplay.

I would like, however, to see something different about the rules. In this fest the character had to be either Erick or Erica and in some of the films, there was either zero dialogue or the name never came up. I would rather see one of two things:

In 48 hour competitions they make each entry say a certain line in the film. Whether that line is spoken or written on a paper, it doesn't matter to me, but just to have that line in there somewhere;

or

Have a single prop that has to appear in each film, like a: flashlight, sunglasses, telephone, lemon, whatever. Just a single prop that has to appear, be used, in each film.

That would ensure the film to be made for this next festival. Well, that's my two cents.

Overland - you have a Cinealta, I think I'm in love with you, man.

how about ....every movie has to include a giant robot in some way !????

also about including other camera's... i think it's a good idea , as i have an old sony ... but agree that some limit would be nice , like the HVX being the highest calibre model allowed , but anything below is ok.

would be interesting to show how invisble or not our equipment is = talent prevails ...

maybe the person who comes LAST in the Drama fest , could pick the next fest ..??

and if its gonna be a SPYFEST , seems pointless having the poll.
