Any guess on deadlines? My unshot, almost totally re-written SciFest script could actually fit into this "spy" genre, but I would need as much time as possible to prep and shoot! Thanks!
 
Yeah, I'm dying to know what the time frame is for this SpyFest. At the moment, it's not something I'm stoked about, but DO realize that it's a sub-genre, and can still make it any genre I want that incorporates something about Spy/Spying (i.e. drama, horror, action, comedy, etc.).

Time frame, and then trying to see if we can come up with a story idea that we just love is going to be key for this one.

Oh, and Hudson, thanks for posting that Wikipedia link for Spy ... I'll be reviewing it more, but it's already getting some ideas going. :beer:

I can pretty much guarantee that if anyone submits a homemade bourne or bond film, they're not gonna win. I'd almost discourage people from trying that. Open up the creativity. There's nearly limitless ways you could go with this. One of my top DramaFest picks, "The Artist", could just about qualify as a SpyFest film, and that sure ain't no "bourne" or "bond" ripoff!

Corporate espionage
Private detectives who "tail" someone
Kids spying on test questions
That silly movie Dogs 'n' Cats (or was it called Cats 'n' Dogs?)
Almost any suspense or thriller involves someone being "found out" or "caught" doing something covert, right?
How many Shakespeare comedies rely on mistaken identity and such in the effort of finding out whether a "true love" would work?

Guys, this genre is as wide-open as you want to make it.

Bond is just one (tediously overplayed) expression that is possible. As long as you're doing some manner of covert information gathering, whether through physical observation or electronic wiretapping or whatever, I think you're probably good to go. Dial M For Murder might qualify. A "caper" movie might qualify, if there's some espionage going on. Heck, the entire TV show "24" would qualify. Anything to do with the CIA or some neighbor's interpretation (perhaps overzealous interpretation) of "neighborhood watch" would qualify.

What about a romantic comedy where the guy's trying to find out a) whether the girl has a "tramp stamp" tattoo, and b) if so, if it says or means anything in particular... in fact, the entire dating scene seems to be centered around "googling" someone before agreeing to go out with 'em, so as long as there's some covert information gathering, that opens up RomCom as a possible expression.

It ain't gotta be a lame-o ripoff of Bourne or Bond. And if someone wants a chance of winning, they'd be probably well advised to not try those; instead put some creativity into it and make something new and original that also meets the specification of that somehow, somewhere, somebody's gotta be spying on something or someone...

That's cool, cause I'll want to be in heavy pre-prod on a feature by then :) Will be a nice small project to tackle, and learn more about HD.:beer:
