NEX- FS700 Skateboarding at 480 fps

I've got the new FS 700 for less than 24 hrs. Slow motion is the main draw for me to this camera. So I found the local skate park, and the guys were keen on showing off their moves. One skateboarder is even in college for TV production.

There is definitely less resolution, and aliasing at 480fps. But last week our only option was the Phantom. Features like super slow motion up to 960 fps in a camera that's sub $10k is something that will make the FS 700 very attractive.

It is slower to work in super slow mo. You record into a buffer, then when you stop recording, it writes it to the card. Makes it difficult in a run n gun situation. We lost opportunities to shoot skaters because the camera was still writing to the card. Just have to pick the right moments.

I set a picture profile with the cinema 1 gamma settings and change a couple of other things, cut it in FCP 7, and did a basic grade with the 3 way CC in FCP.

Hi Nigel,

Thanks for posting this. I noticed that the video seems to contain excessive banding. Is this the result of the grade, or is this present in the original video?

Thanks

I didn't have chance to do any side by side with my F3. But the DR is impressive. Shooting fully backlit you could see the skaters face, and even with a Cine 1, and Cinema gamma, had room to grade. I just did a basic colour correction with the three way colour corrector, and there was lots there to see faces. I still have to look at some of the other footage at 120 and 240 fps

We shot at 480 fps and at that speed there is less resolution, and is softer. The banding etc is there, but I think it would be still useable. At 120 and 240 fps you get full 1080 P. I have some other footage we shot today before I had to give back the camera. That has a mixture of speeds. I'm interested to see how the different speeds cut when you loose some of the resolution at 480. Will post later tonight.

The hilight handling of this camera is very impressive - impresses me on the same level as the C300. Is that your feeling?

Thanks for sharing this.

Fairly impressive test of the slo-mo, but for the tricks being done, this seems TOO SLOW, IMO. Like, "OK, we saw the trick, not let's return to normal speed."

If there were a lot of technical board flips/body spins being demonstrated, maybe. But not for this subject matter.

Thanks for sharing, though. Lord knows we are going to be seeing some amazing skate footage to come with this camera.

To my eye, I think it handles the highlights really well. I didn't have time to put them all side by side. The C 300 wins on a lot of other aspects, so highlight handling seems good, but I did see some things that make you say humm in the highlights. But, the camera I had is a pre-production model, and there are some things that are not set in the firmware, so I would much rather wait for the production models, and proper tests before I make any conclusions.

I stumbled on these guys skateboarding. For me it was a test to look at the slow motion, trying to add a bit in the edit. But, I'm no editor, and if it were a spot there would be a different edit. For this test everything after 240 fps has less resolution. I wanted to see how that looked, and how Matrix ish you could make it feel at that speed. We're on a doorstep of the next thing. I saw a quote that read, "slow motion is the next DOF". He was right. I told some dealers recently, I'm looking for features. That helps me give value added for my clients. Our world will be slower online soon.
