News Gathering

Hi. Sorry but I'm posting in both the HVX and A1 forum. I am wondering if anyone has used the A1 for news gathering or stringer work and what their experiences are, especially for lowlight situations. Also has anyone used the BNC output and does it have any advantages for being out in the field with other photographers. And last question... do you shoot HD or SD and how do you get your video to clients? Thank you!

uh, lol, well. I can say that I have used the BNC to view my frame on an external monitor during a shoot but it wasn't run -n- gun style, it was set up for an interview of a boxer.

well i thought it was cool that the canon had a bnc output. It can hook up to live trucks if you were ever out in the field.

From my experience the A1 doesn't seem to be a very good run and gun camera. Most of the adjustment that you need to do required you to go into the menu and tweak the settings, which is difficult to do in a live situation. It's especially annoying that I can't customize my presets while recording. The other day I was covering a live show when I noticed that the stage light made everybody looked REALLY red and I couldn't get into the menu to compensate for the color until intermission. If you're able to take the time to set up, the sheer amount of control on the A1 will get you amazing results.

You need to customize settings before you start recording! But generally shooting run and gun is going ok, you have superior OIS, and push focus, auto mode etc.

And of course that's what I would have done if it was a film. Unfortunately in this case the image looks perfectly fine until they turn on the lights and the show begins. Either I stop the camera and miss parts of the show or I let it run all the way through. And before you comment on why I didn't know the light setup before hand I'll tell you that I was covering it as a last minute favor to a friend. My point is, in a run and gun situation, things happens that you don't anticipate and your ability to adjust the camera to adapt is crucial. Nothing against the A1, I love it as a camera, but sometimes I do feel the pain of cramming too many settings into the menu.
