Finally, our web guy got around to uploading my newest short. It's 38mb, 8min 10sec long. It's an .mp4 file so you need quicktime to view. It's only hinted for internet streaming, so you may wish to right click and save if it takes long to load. Hope you guys like it.

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

(My speakers are currently not integrated with my new setup so I only caught the visual obviously, however...)

I love the shadow work (pardon the non-technical term there). The camera angles and lighting are very nice imo. I recall that you had a very tight schedule (something about the location changing ownership or something) and I think the look you pulled off here is very very nice especially considering the time crunch. Great job!

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

VERY well done. I was drawn in the WHOLE way through the movie. Very nice composition.

That drop from the rafters was my favorite part.

That lead actor looks familiar somehow... the one who wants to "become one" - (for any who hasn't seen it yet) ;) Was he in any other pictures you put on here or something?

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

very well done. well thought out story with wonderfull acting. For the lenght of the movie you did pretty good job. My only thing would be, I expected more of close-up shots and maybe little tighter cutting in the last part when he grabs him. Also I liked the idea when the guy enters the upper floor and the dracula dude jumps down. I think it did not work as powerful as it could if you would do for example close up of the normal guy when all sudden behind his back the dude jumps. Just a suggestion since we are here to critique, constructively.lol.

Besides these minor details..loved the music, pretty simple and well suited for the story.

Excellent...just excellent. Every element was perfect! I am amazed at the quality of the writing and how a real "beginning, middle, and end" was woven into just 8 minutes. The shots were awesome and well thought out, lighting was amazing, great sound and music. Congratulations man...let us know what you win. ;)

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

You know why I dig Stabb Films? Cause they routinely make good films and they dont dissapoint here; this is good ole scary fun.

You know when I originally saw the teaser frame grabs I had thought that the lighting was off somewhat but it is now that I see it was just those selections of grabs and I was not seeing the whole picture. This is well worth the download in many categories.

The Cinematography is sharp and well executed. A variety of styles serves to really compliment this fun short. I wish there had been even more movement in the camera; I wanted some dolly shots here! But this is in no way a detriment to the piece because it crafted so nice.

The Actors
Way above par on this one. Both actors did a great job. Usually you can spot the bad ones a mile away but these guys can flat out ****ing act. I was stumbling over my Rolodex scribbling Stabb Actors. Not every single line was perfect but overall these guys get an A.

The Music
I loved the music. Had a nice gothic string feel. The cellos deep resonance moved this along nicely. My only complaint is that when the action picked up towards the end I would have liked to have seen a quicker pace in music.

The Story
Excellent. This had me from frame one. It was a story within a story and it only illustrated that there is a much bigger darker world out there. Awesome.

Editing
Tight tight tight. This is editing. One actor speaks while we see many different shots within the line. Excellent.

From the moment the wolves baled to the creature screaming "Ruuunnnnn!" I was digging on this. great job all the way around. This is filmmaking. **** all that pansy ass "Let's try and say something" crap. This was plain ole scary horror fun. I want more from Stabb films and a Vamp short really gets me going!

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

I thought it was great too. Loved the lighting and the acting. Only 2 nights, that's really good. I gotta learn to speed things up on set. Lately I'm at a snails pace when it comes to lighting, focus, and framing! :)

Good work!

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

Nice work! :)  The lighting, acting, were quite strong.

A few pieces of constructive criticism:

-- Some of the camera work could have been a bit more dynamic.  For instance, the part where Mr Baker spins around saying how perfect he would be as a vamp, the low (mostly)static cam took away from his energy somewhat.

--Some of the cuts (mainly only at the beginning) were to abrupt.  For instance, the shot of the front door swinging open with a dolly to the right which cuts to Mr. Baker entering the house.  The dolly shot was very short and it seemed as if the dolly movement had only just begun and then it cuts to a shot that looks too similar to the shot that precedes the dolly shot.

--The music was the weakest area of the piece imho.  It didn't have the same "feeling" that the visuals had.  I thought it was too sparse.

Even still, this is a very good piece.  I liked how certain aspects of the story went against what was expected, while other aspects gave the viewer what was expected (to good effect).

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

I thought this looked great. The lighting is amazing. The one part I didn't like was Mr. Baker's spin -- just a little too broadway for the tone ;)

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

Hey I thought it was great!. I loved the acting. The music could have been better but still I felt it was fine.
I also agree that there should have been more close ups, one or two crane and or dolly shots.
All in all I was entertained... I love it... it kept me on the edge of my chair.

Kudos’...

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

Not much to add. Very nice! Nice script, great cinematography, great acting, as well as a good production design, makeup, etc... It was well directed, with some nice camera angles, and a nice scene choreography. The sound is surely the lowest aspect, but not in anyway below average. It was pretty much what you get in short films on the net, but it was not top notch as the imagery. That includes music. Other than that, it was absolutely awesome. Unlike others, I prefer when those films actually say something, but I respect some people's choices not to. It was a fun legitimate piece of work...

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

Good job Stabbs..in fact great work for just little more than a day of work in the project.

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

Well done! :)

One of the better shorts I have watched through this forum. The story and dialog was tight and kept my interest. The shots were dynamic enough to keep the visual interest moving but not so much that I was distracted. Yes, the shot of the vampire dropping from the rafters was good. As was mentioned earlier, the music is good and fits the theme but it needed to pick up for the ending.

I'm interested in the lighting for the shots. With the DVX being so fickle with low light, how did you manage the shots?

Thanks and good job!

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

I agree with most of the above, but . . .

If were going for the washed-out look, then good job!

If not, it was, well, washed out. Granted, the muted tones and crushed blacks made what colors there were pop (like the red of the hood), but it looked a little lifeless to me.

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

Interesting point David.

Perhaps some other sources of light could have been used? Maybe instead of a cold wash some spalshes of warm highlights would liven it up?

Another thing that might of help is more 'ambience' in the attic (i think it was some kind of attic in a unfinished building?). Perhaps a more 'lived in' approach in set design in regards to the creature.

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

Yeah, but the double lighting, although very hip these days, doesn't make a whole lot of sense, does it? Afterall, he is a vampire, is afraid of light and the only sources of light are the flashlight and the moonlight. Where could the golden light be coming from?

And c'mon, The guy is a weak vampire, deprived from his only source of demoniac power that is blood, everything is unsaturated and cold except for the *red* in his clothing... It is darn coherent... A Simple metaphor, but effective.

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

I thought this was excellent, one of the better shorts I have seen so far. Great acting and fantastic lighting.

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

Great job. I thought the acting was very good. Did you do voice overs on this?

Re: Newest Short "TRITE" Now Online

Kyle_of Maryland: I think you are asking if we did ADR? The answer is no, all dialogue is straight from the shoot. Wished we did wild lines(for some reason forgot - always get them!!!), couple times could have used cleaner dialogue. Easy thing was that for most of the show we hardly saw the character Joseph's face, so I was able to use his "best" lines for different parts.

HansK: As for low lighting... I suck at lighting, it is my worst aspect of filmmaking, it is greek to me. The evening before we shot, a buddy and I pre lit the "set". This entailed hours of trying different setups, until we finally got something I liked. Had the iris almost open between 1.7-2.4 for the entire show, using several mini moles in the attic, and 2 650w on the middle floor, then different arrangements of those lights on the main floor and outside. Full CTB on all lights. My biggest fear was it being too dark, so I think we over lit to make sure it was visible(especially for web viewing).

As for the mood, I've got matrix off, and -4's for chroma and color, so this takes a lot out of the reds. Joseph wearing a red hoodie... choice of 2 wardrobe pieces he brought, other hoodie barely covered his face, so we went red - also liked how it stood out. (no one has mentioned it, but we briefly see Joseph in the rafters as we are dollying backward looking up at Mr. Baker. You'll notice the red hoodie.)

I was blessed with good actors. Tough, very tough to find good "free" actors. I hope I can help these guys get their careers going!

If the actors are in I want to do a part 2 to this in fall/winter this year, so this may not be the last of Jospeh & Mr. Baker.

Thank you all for the feedback, so far it's been a positive experience, now my goal is to get it into some festivals.
