Newer GH1s better codec than older ones?

Now I am busy fighting the fight of pulldown removal on those of us who are on PC based systems, but I had a buddy come over with his GH1 and we both shot nearly identicle 1080p stuff with the same settings, and he had noticeable more skew / mud / and streak type artifacts on the very same scene.

Yes I know I would have to go and post the original files for comparison which I can't do he took off but even HE noticed it. My cameras image was clearly better.

My serial # was considerably later than his... about a year difference.

I think it is a known fact that the first sensors were not made in the same plant. But I cannot find a source.

Don't know if it is trustworthy but I found this
"I am told that since the fall of 2009, manufacture of the older GH1 sensor was transferred to the new Tonami plant to get things up and running there. Unforeseen circumstances resulted in a worldwide shortages of the GH1 at the same time period of the cross-over."

i must have a newer one, because i haven't seen most of what people complain about regarding mud, etc. I bought mine in mid Nov 2009.

Got mine in July 2009 so if anyone is gonna have problems its me. I mean there are issues, but they're quite manageable. I just got off a shoot at night outside shooting as slow as f/4 and things were fine. I would see FPN occasionally on a background object or something and my solution was always "hey rotate that softbox over here get some more light on this wall...hmmmm not enough, ok take the diffusion off...now move it back a little...beautiful." No more FPN.

Yes. People aren't surprised that a pet will die if not fed, or that a plant will die if not watered, and yet they are so, so surprised, that their image dies when not fed light. All it takes to solve many problems with any camera is a little bit of light...that thing they eat to survive.

:beer:nice- B

BTW, I'm also a July GH-1 baby- ...."give me Light or give me death"

I get the whole light thing. I am just saying we shot the same thing and there was more noise and artifacts in his image.. same light, same setting, same kit lens, but def more... mushyness or something in his image.

I know now someone's gonna want a real test done with both images side by side. I am too busy trying to get Edius to fix handling native GH1 1080p footage correctly so I don't have to use neoscene anymore.

Yeah, if you've got the chance to post exact same footage from both cameras, same settings, etc, please post...

How can you be sure, even if you buy today, that it is not older stock?
Or is it just a firmware update?

Given the supply/demand of this product last summer- even into the fall of '09 I would say any new stock was just that≥..NEW STOCK. Stores couldn't keep these on the shelves for any amount of time.
I would feel confident that a reputable dealer like B&H or J&R would have newer stock at this point.

But yeah- lets see a side by side!!-- C'MON BLACKOUT LETS GO!!!!:2vrolijk_08:

I got mine in August 2009. I love my GH1, but I get a lot of FPN in many different situations. I find it hard to believe that the new ones could be that much better....but I sometimes wonder!

I am going to try and get my buddy who has the older model to come and do this again with me but it won't be for at least a week or two as I am way bogged down with other acting stuff as well as shooting a doc in detroit this week. But anyone can do this test, take an old GH1 and a new one and mount them side buy side and shoot.

GH2 wont be out for awhile. That is my opinion since the panasonic guys at NAB said" We have the AG-AF100 and G2 coming out soon but haven't heard anything on the GH2"
