Newbie Struggling With One Confusing Issue

i am new to HDSLR as well as videography in general. i have recently purchased a 60D specifically to shoot video for a trip i'm taking to india. the intended output will be to blu ray.

i have spent the past few days researching and trying to decide between shooting 24p and 30p. i know there are a lot of threads on this - i've read many of them until my eyes were blurry:violin:

i want to go for the film look, so i did some tests with 24p and quickly found out about the strobing/pan issue. for stationary things i can solve this by panning very slowly, but i was disappointed when a clip of people marching across the screen showed very visible strobing. in a crowded place like india, any street scene with many people and cars could show excessive strobing. i also won't have the luxury of setting up a tripod very often, and being handheld apparently contributes to even more strobing.

my other option is to go 30p. strobing will be less, but my final output is blu ray and 30p is not directly supported. i've read that i could easily go to 60i for final output, but i'm not sure if any quality loss could occur.

i am very torn between these options. am i seeing excessive strobing because i'm looking for it? does turning off IS help reduce it? is converting 30p to 60i for blu ray viable versus just going 24p all the way? i really would appreciate any help! :embarasse

ok now i can answer two of the questions myself. i played the "problem" 24p footage for my gf and she didn't see anything wrong. of course once i told her to look for strobing she noticed right away. so i am seeing things the average audience member doesn't see.

i've also found out that 30p can be worked to go on blu ray, but of course the process is not as easy as just going 24p for everything.

if anyone can advise on the IS question that would be very appreciated. should i leave IS on for handheld or tripod shots?

What's your shutter speed? This might be the problem. For 24p set it to 50, for 30p set it for 60....you get the idea.

I've noticed that I don't like 24p any more than I can throw it, any bit of camera motion seems to blur the entire video until the camera motion stops, (then it turns crystal clear) and moving cars are a mess. The thing to keep in mind though is Quicktime may only play the videos at 12FPS to save computer processing or whatever (thats what the Movie Inspecter option says) so we both may be worrying over nothing. As a tip, it seems 60 really is the shutter to use for 24P, but to be honest, if this really an issue with the frame rate, nothings gonna fix it beyond a higher frame rate (30P and 60P look so much better to me eyes, personally.) If it were my world, I'd fill everything with 30P, but with all the specific formats out there, it's probably best not to do anything but 24P. But isn't 30P usually used for television based purposes (since 60i is still widely used?). I'm not sure, it may sound bad, but Youtube's preferred frame rate would influence me strongly, too, whatever it is.

The overwhelming opinion has been:

Always leave the IS on when the camera is not stabilized on sticks or something sturdy and controlled like a slider. Most definitely keep it on if you are using no rig to operate the camera - i.e. hand-held.

Turn off IS when its on the sticks. If it were on and someone were to bump the tripod, the IS would exaggerate the problem by trying to compensate for the movement; what would be an editable take could be ruined. And the point of a tripod is to get a static, solid frame, the edges of which IS could gray a little with the slightest movements transmitted into the tripod head.

i was shooting at 1/50 shutter speed. i will be trying 1/60 though. i think my computer was playing at 24fps - 12fps would be too obviously jerky, and everything is smooth without panning or quick movement of the subjects. i will do more tests to see if i can get used to the strobing and if others notice it as much as i do.

thanks for the tip about IS. i will keep that in mind.
