Newbie questions...

After a lot of reading, it's becoming clear that my next camera is going to be an HVX+M2... My old Arri S and my trustee Beaulieu r16 are going to find themself on ebay very soon:) HD bootcamp this coming saturday and then I plan to order the HVX.

Everything I plan to shoot will go threw Digital Intermediate(I work in post). So my question is: what is the best setting if any to make digital intermediate easier? or to be precise what setting will give the biggest chroma/lum. range?

Do any of you use an UV/neutral filter to protect your lens? ( I do on all my Nikon lenses)

and last question how good or bad is the built in mic. I do plan to get an external mic in the future (probably the K6-ME66) but I think the HVX and M2 is enough money for now.

cheers.

I would use a Filter to protect the lens, and invest in the microphone before the M2 adapter. The on camera mic is not meant for film quality audio production, it is more for the benefit of capturing live ambient sound. Put your mic near the incident of sound for the best reproduction. This is not possible with the built in mic.

Hope this helps,

Jan

re: microphones - try a Rode NTG1 or NTG2 before you buy anything else. No vested interest here - other than they are Aussie made. Excellent quality and great sound.

I use a UV filter to protect my lens. In fact, the very first thing I did after unpacking the camera was to install it -- before I shot a frame of footage. The lens is far too precious to risk damage...

Incidentally, I just ordered a Rode NTG-2 mic. It is set to be delivered this afternoon. I'll post a review once I've had time to test it properly.

I highly suggest reading the "stickies" in the audio forum and to rethink your purchase of the ME66. Look for things posted by: TheYankee, Wabbit, or MattinSTL. (along with a few others)

Thanks. I am actually looking at the Oktava.

Beware it is very very susceptible to handling noise- even on the camera. I like mine alot, but you really have to be careful with it picking up handling noise. Uber sensitive... I'm pleased as punch with the AT 4073 as an on board mic. I also have a ME66 , and the AT is much preferred as an all around shotgun.

What he said... I have the Rode NTG2 and have had no problems..... despite it coming from Austrailia ;)

Indy....

Speaking of the lens, how can I clean it. Any advice? There is a little bit of dust on it, but I don''t want to destroy the lens off course.

I have the ntg2 and the only glitch I have with it is, because it's from Australia it has to be mounted on the bottom of the camera.

Do a search.

There was a decent thread a couple weeks back.
