New vision color film LUTs

Very intrigued by the full negative - positive print stock LUT process Impulze offers though. May have to look into it.

It's only appropriate, I think, for certain projects.

I've been playing with these LUTs for weeks now, and I have little doubt now that they are true representations of how film renders color. It's really amazing just how many things are going on with the colors...some colors almost disappear (purple), others like skin tones are simplified and often exaggerated. Those 3 dye layers just plain were not very accurate, by modern video standards. That said, it's usually beautiful, if only because most of us have been watching movies for so long.

What the negative/film print combo does though is it doubles up on these traits. The colors become even more simplified. The film stocks together almost become they're own palette...you have to be ok with some colors and tonalities becoming pretty unobtainable...

I think in many ways, that's what appeals to me most about that 'look'. The fact that it refines down your colour palette to a more limited range - I think there's something very powerful in the aesthetic of a controlled colour palette, only having the colours you want in the frame lends it a certain feeling of purpose I suppose.

And certainly, that's something that should generally come from good art direction - but in instances where that isn't the case, I feel like the looks these LUTs can create, can get you a good deal of the way there.

Somewhat overwhelmed at the number of options with the ImplulZ Ultimate package... and I love it.

Here's a grab from a C100 short

As per my previous post, here is a TEST LUT for the F35 you can try that goes from slog to LC709-A. I don't know if it will work so please try it out and let me know the results. I'm curious to know.

F35-to-LC709-A LUT

Thanks for this Dennis. I try and don't really like result. I think it makes F35 footage look like cheap F3 or FS700 look.

Maybe because of this?
The slog to LC709-A LUT I posted is 1D gamma only, so it's not likely to give the same result as using the Sony provided LUT, except those LUTS are meant for slog2/3.

Using Slog2 should work ok, but you might need a bit of tweaking.

Do you have before and after frame of F55 with LC709-A?

I saw resolve has some other LC709-A option. Is this the F55 one? Looked not good with F35.

LC709-A specifically came from Sony for the F5/F55 & F65, and is only available for slog2 and slog3. If you're using the F35 it uses slog1, so you can try the slog2 LUT which is an identical log curve, but will need to adjust the gain, lift, or shift a bit.

Yes but so the LC709-A for slog 2 come loaded in resolve already? I have it but didn't load it. Didn't know it was there thought need to get from sony.

Hm not sure, maybe you dropped it in once and forgot.. anyway you there two sets of 4 LUTs by Sony meant for both slog2 and slog3. There is also the original F65 to REC709 LUT which was in Beta and meant for slog2, I used it quite a bit a year ago when the F's first came out and there was nothing else available.

I'm trying to put together a new page on my site with all these darn LUTs so its a bit easier to track, download and manage for others.

Right now all I have is this: www.starcentral.ca/forums/LUTs. It's ain't pretty but it works

I like alexa resolve LUT. But I only see slog3 LC709-A in resolve. Where to get slog2 LC709-A?
