New vision color film LUTs

i'm going to buy these right now - i have the other luts from them but here i shalt grab and test er.

I'm testing a few, but lately in love with LC-709A which is basically Alexa clone by Sony.

On one shoot I even baked it directly onto footage and client said they liked it better than Alexa.

Today I used it as LUT for monitoring, was superb. No Sony look. Poof gone.

I messed around a bit with these LUTs with some of my older footage. Very, very nice. Lots of options and flexibility. The Kodak Vision LUTs are particularly tasty to my eye.

i got them a little while ago. only had time to test a few of the s-log variants.

first impression is that the mid point gets pushed a little low and they're quite aggressive on the highs - tinting them and limiting them quite a bit

none of them really look "natural"... they all look a little over processed like hipster/instagram looks.

however, if you tweak them you can tone all this down and they do even out your skin tones in mixed lighting situations.

I'm really looking for that perfect starting point like mac's anti slog (daylight balanced) LUT but with a creamier colour pallet for skin!!! :)

+1 on the LC-709A lut? is this in the kit?

Starcentral, how do you get the LC-709A lut?

Here (but note it is meant for slog2 and slog3)

http://community.sony.com/sony/atta...2707/1/SonyLookProfiles_SLog3_SGamut3Cine.zip

I plan to modify it for my own use because if you use it for gauging exposure by your monitor, you can easily over expose your image by quite a bit. The reason for this is because LC709-A maps true 90% white down to 71% in the LUT. So the tendency if using a monitor for exposure is you might over-expose.

NOTE Sony's are only for slog2/3. I can post one for slog1 (F35 and F3) but no idea how it will look or work, it's worth a shot for you guys I guess.

As per my previous post, here is a TEST LUT for the F35 you can try that goes from slog to LC709-A. I don't know if it will work so please try it out and let me know the results. I'm curious to know.

F35-to-LC709-A LUT

Is there any way to combine ACES and LUTs? I love the extra color information of ACES, but I'd still love to be able to use some of my old LUTs (and these new VisionColor LUTs). I know it doesn't make sense mathematically, but still...

I don't think they work well together, unless designed to do so.

But Nate is more experienced in this department.

Paging Me. Weaver?!

The slog to LC709-A LUT I posted is 1D gamma only, so it's not likely to give the same result as using the Sony provided LUT, except those LUTS are meant for slog2/3.

Using Slog2 should work ok, but you might need a bit of tweaking.

Here is a short vid with some of the Impulze applied.

The node tree in Resolve went like this:

1-Balance/Exposure (zereod in this video)

2-Impulze (Slog3 to Vision3 250D-->Cineon) LUT

3-Grade/Look (added saturation and contrast)

4-Impulze (Cineon to 2383 Print) LUT

The footage was shot 4K raw, and decoded via camera raw panel to Slog3/SGamut.cine before the above node tree.

This chain is one of the ways Denver Riddle recommends things if you want to combo a negative emulation coupled with a film print emulation. It procedurally emulates the entire film process.

The end result picked up too much contrast in the Vimeo encode, but still looks good.

Nope. Unfortunately can't combo ACES and LUTs in Resolve.

You can do it, but because ACES has such a big processing bucket internally, regular 3D LUTs wind up clipping your output to about 65IRE when applied.

I find the color response of the Impulze LUTs so far off of ACES, that I'm not sure combo-ing the two would net you a good starting point anyway. I'm getting great results with Impulze just working from Slog3.

Never noticed, but Resolve v10.1.2 seems to have come with a bunch of film looks under the LUTs menu.

Anyone else notice these or.... ?

They are variations of Fujifilm 3513, and Kodak 2383.

Yes, and although they expect cineon log input they do work beautifully with s-log2 footage which is reasonably close in DR distribution. (The Rec709 versions target 2.4 gamma, you may need to pull blacks down a bit for 2.2 if you need that.)

I've been getting great results from Juan's LUTs and Filmconvert.

Very intrigued by the full negative - positive print stock LUT process Impulze offers though. May have to look into it.
