Hi,

I've posted some new clips from the SI-1920HDVR in the footage gallery section of our website.

These are full-resolution 1080/24P WMV clips.

More will be coming in the next couple days.

Thanks,

Jason

These clips are great! I'm not sure I know what the problems associated with rolling shutter look like, but is it fair to assume, if this camera had those problems they would have showed up when the cars passed across the screen? I was looking frame-by-frame and each looked normal.

They're a little soft, but I assume the aperture was open all the way? Do you know what lens was used? Was focus at infinity?

For mac users: I noticed flip4mac wmv player for Quicktime adds tons of compression noise that's not present in the normal Windows Media Player. However, on my dual G5, WMP can't play these files at full speed, while QT has no problem. It's a trade off.

Aperture is wide open at a f1.2 . . . so unfortunetly not the strongest part of the lens. Of course this was done to keep the gain at 0db :)

And no, there are no rolling shutter problems . . . we clock the chip fairly high to keep the read-outs fast so that rolling shutter is not an issue.

Jason,
I finally saw the photos of the camera on the "Virtual NAB" part of your site. Is that the final design? --- cuz it's kinda wicked ugly. I thought my HVX was a little homely, but this thing... sheesh! ;-)

How much does that thing weight? The imagery looks good --- a little soft like oldenarm said, but really nice. Good luck with everything! And may people like you continue to drive the price of these high-quality cameras down, down, down.

My understanding that the mechanical design is not final. The unit will be a little shorter and the battery mount moved to the back, and a few pounds will come off. It will likely never be a true beauty, but that was not the reason to build it.

I think bar the Red camera this is the most exciting news for people like us for a long time. I think the image quality is great and I love that you can use canon and Nikon lenses on it.... Shooting raw is a genius idea, and grading on the fly 10 bit in the NLE is a major step forward....However, I also have concerns over the design and it doesnt exactly look practical for hand held shooting.

But my biggest question would be this - I dont think I'm in a position to buy this thing, and if I had the money I may even wait another 8 months for Red before lashing out $20,000....however, how would one go about renting it? If it does only produce files that can work on a system with a $2000 'cineform' plugin then it soulds like SI are relying on people buying this and they wont be in the rental market at all. Sounds pretty dangerous.

Or do they plan to include some other codec that is a little more universal?

Im only saying this as I dont think the average indoe film-maker like me could afford this, and if they could I think the size and features of Red are probably worth the wait for the same/similar price. If you cannot rent this camera then it surely is going to lose SI a lot of potential customers, and thats a shame as it'll be shipping shortly.

Apart from that I think its a great camera, and another step in the big revolution thats currently going on.
