Hello - I'm a proud new owner of an HVX200 and member of this forum. I'm really grateful to have found this place and plan on searching the archives for my many questions.

Can someone tell me if I have to format my brand new P2 cards before their 1st use? I did put them in and record to them this morning without first formatting them. I can see the thumbnails in the viewfinder but can't seem to be able to transfer them over to my Mac. Also, is there an update to the utility disk that came with the P2's ? I've tried installing the disk several times on my Mac but am unable to locate it after install. Also, when I try connecting my firewire cable from the camera to the Mac, nothing happens .... the P2 doesn't show up as a drive on my desktop ???

Sorry if these are lame questions. Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

You might consider buying P2 genie. check it here.... http://www.p2genie.com/ you can make a search in the forum to get more details...i personally had it installed on my macbook before having the camera so i never transfered any data without it. It ensures error free transfers and help keep the files organized.

Be careful to always turn your camera off before plugin it in the firewire port. Theyre is risk of damaging the fw port on your hvx if you hotplug it in.

About formating the p2 card. I format after transfering the data to my laptop. basicly each time i re use the card. I guess you could erase the clips manually too. Formating is faster.

Enjoy the cam!

Actually, I get as many error ladened transfers with P2 Log and P2 Genie as I do with the FCP 5.1.2 P2 Import window. There's an OS X bug. So P2 Genie does not "ensure" error free transfers. I'd just use the FCP 5.1.2 P2 Import window. It spans clips, let's you add/change the same info as in the Log & Capture window, let's you configure to import only the audio channels you want (no longer forcing you to have four of them), etc, etc, etc. It does the pulldown removal, too.

When you install the P2 drivers on your Mac, there's nothing you will "see" on yoru Mac. It just lets the OS see P2 cards as P2 cards.

After connecting the camera to the Mac, switch it on, press the little button on the back to put it in playback mode, then hold that little button down for a few seconds until the firewire notice and "connect" show up in the cam's LCD screen.

Then launch FCP and go to File > Import > Import P2 data (or something like that).

Trashing the P2 card contents with your computer is a BAD idea, as there are a ton of hidden files there. Always format (erase) your P2 cards in the camera!
