New Uprez software from Red Giant

Wow! Now that offers some real possibilities. And at only $99 I don't know that you could really go wrong with it. I'm definitely downloading the demo. My bet is that it renders even slower than MB. :D

Now admittedly, this is a crude test because the only footage I had available is pretty grainy to begin with and was shot in squeeze mode. Also, I don't think the original footage is completely in focus.... :)

Here's the original SD footage uprezzed to 1280x720 using Photozoom:

And then using InstantHD:

That's quite impressive! I'm sure there's some way to make a super image, combining Photozoom's s-spline and this software

I brought the original footage into an HD project (1280 x 720). Applied the plugin and resized the footage....I then exported it to the same specs and it rendered about the same speed as it would any SD DV movie so no long renders here.

I'm pretty impressed. I'll have to do some extensive testing before I give up my Photozoom method.

k, so here's another example. I don't seem to have any noiseless footage so here goes:

Original SD DV file:

and the uprezzed version using InstantHD:

hrm, just tried it out myself, and it seems to stretch the image making things SLIGHTLY thinner. Do a side by side comparison, same size screen of the before and after.. me no liky that. reason?

As suspected, it does VERY well at places of high contrast; the hand on the torch/flashlight is pretty impressive:

My question is this. From a workflow point of view, if you didn't have the money to purchase HD cameras, would this be a viable alternative for a short time? The market I am in (mainly event work) doesn't call for HD work yet, but I am wondering if it would be possible to offer this as an HD solution if a client specifically asked for it. Obviously it won't be as good as native HD, but is this even feasible? I would think so since that is how Red Giant seems to be marketing it. But what do you guys think?

I would say no. In my mind, it would be cheating clients to say you were producing HD when you are not.

This is acceptable for displaying SD in an HD environment (plasma, lcd display, etc.) and for mixing SD and HD in the one project.

Would it be unethical to offer services such as upsampling an event that was previously shot in SD to HD, should the client ask for that?
