New to the forum, and to the camera

Hey everyone, I am seriously contemplating buying a Canon 7D, but one of the features that sort of irks me is the inability to go slower than 1/30 in shutter speed while shooting video. Slower shutter speed, around 1/8, is kind of an interesting and (I've found at least) effective artistic tool to use in the production of shorts I've made or been a part of.

Has this function has been implemented in firmware updates, or is it even possible that this could be done with firmware updates?

Thanks a lot for the info!

That would not work with this camera- would result in blank frames... The shutter speed has to be at least the frame rate.

I see. Well thanks for letting me know. What exactly are the technical reasons that say for example, the Canon XL-H1 can shoot all the way down to 1/4 shutter speed and a 7D cannot? Just curious since I don't have a lot of knowledge about the devices as a whole.

It's not a video camera as those cameras are- totally different way of functioning. If you want that sort of effect you should stick with something like an XL-H1.
