New to forum, unpacking AG-DVX100Bp NOW! Advice?

Well Hello there!

I finally joined this forum and made my purchase after reading pros and cons of all kinds for about 3 months... Thanks for helping me finally make a decision... I'm unpacking my "choice" camera now (AG-DVX100Bp) and would welcome any advice from any users out there who own the same one.
I'm already past the clunking sound... lol You guys tipped me off to that in a posting I read a few weeks ago... Thanks for that, or I would have gone nuts!

Sincerely,
Matt (Impossible)

Spare battery... Excellent suggestion. Luckily, I got one with the purchase. It was on the top of my list of add-ons. The brand is EMPIRE(?) but he assured me that it's a 4 hour battery of equal quality as the 4 hour PANASONIC. I'll have to use it to find out, but at least it works with the Panasonic charger, so until I get the Anton Bauer or Switronix battery set-up, I'll use the stuff that came in the box.

Expose for highlights... Great suggestion. If that suggestion was made because your insight tells you I'm an amateur (you're right), or because the DVX100B limitations require that sort of extra tweaking (I have a feeling you're right again), I'll do my best to always keep that in mind. I really want to get the most out of this thing, and put at the very least a decent quality image on the tape.

UV protection filter... You won't believe this... I FORGOT THAT! And what's even more embarrassing is, it wasn't even on my list of add-ons! I guess since it's so obvious, I probably assumed I would remember. I have one on my other cameras (consumer Sony miniDV TRV19, Canon high 8mm, and even on my old Canon AE1 still) Stupid me! My list does have Tiffen on it, but not the actual words "protection filter". I got so caught up in the excitement of finally counting out a wad of 100 dollar bills on the counter, that my mind became jelly when the box came out and was inches away from hungry little hands (cue evil laff). Thanks for the reminder! It's on the list squeezed in AT THE TOP! 72mm UV protection filter!

Here's a STUPID mistake I already made... I attached the external mic holder to the camera using a magnetic screwdriver! Talk about living life on the edge, huh? lol (Also added to list: "NOTE TO SELF: Buy some basic ALLOY tools, you idiot!"

Much thanks, a round of drinks for everyone!

Hey Matt, welcome to the club and enjoy your new camera.

I own a 100b and I have learned a small valuable lesson about this camera....

One of the new and improved upon features for the B model is the overscan LCD and EVF. (The ability to see the ENTIRE image caught to tape).

HOWEVER, when using SQUEEZE MODE, there is a 10% underscan in the LCD!!! (the EVF will still gives you the entire image, so you can double check your framing in the EVF.)

I learned this the hard way and actually started a post about it to inform others. Maybe you saw it.

If not, there is my small contribution.

Enjoy! And happy shooting.

Ted

Okay Ted... Thanks for the heads-up on that! Haven't gotten that far yet, only had the camera for about 20 hours. Either they need a bigger manual or I need to get glasses. lol

Much appreciation, and another round of drinks for all (hiccup)

Matt

Matt,

Shoot tests for any of your projects as you get a feel for the look of the camera. I shot a bunch of outdoor footage in CINELINE gamma mode, and it turned out not to have a wide enough latitude for the high contrast ratios outdoors. CINELINE_D might have been a better choice and I might have caught that if I had shot some more tests. For more controlled interiors shot later on, CINELINE was perfect.

Thanks Josh. If the weather holds out, I might go take a ride and do some testing in a variety of conditions and document my findings and the settings that gave me those findings. Probably do the pre-sets first, and go on from there.

Matt

PS: I got the UV protection filter last night, because me like an idiot, forgot to get it when I bought the camera!
