New Tascam DR-60D MkII and DR-44 WL4

44 looks like a nice bump from the 40.
60II also good choices on improvements on the original.

They are really apples and oranges though. If the 60 fits some specific need then it's a good deal, but I like Darren would be more interested in the 70D since it would fit my usage better.

I have a 40D and it's nice, solid and very handy. The 44 is what I would get to replace it.

The 44 appears to more bag friendly than the 40 and a has four mic/line inputs

> Allegedly.. the pre-amps are 'improved', but I'm sure not anyway near the quality of high-end gear. You still get what you pay for and the skill (or lack thereof) of the the operator(s) cant' be overlooked.

Are you looking at the same DR-44 WL4 that I'm looking at? Handheld form factor with built-in XY mic array, same as Tascam's other handhelds. Only two combo XLR/quarter-inch mic/line inputs.

It's the soon-to-be-available DR-70D that is bag-friendly with four mic/line, XLR combo inputs.

All of it's meaningless unless the pre-amps have gotten better.

Not sure how you come to that conclusion, unless you feel the mic pres on the DR40 are so bad as to make them unusable.
I think you would get plenty of people to disagree with you if you do.

So assuming the same quality of mic pre you are getting more tracks and in one case a much more bag friendly form factor.
Which is pretty meaningful.
