new stedicam

"Use this rig as a private use only. Rig cannot be duplicated and sold, it is strictly Illegal."

I got a crack out of this :costumed-smiley-047

Aah yes, "U-bend cam" ... it's been on e-bay for a few monthes now.

Amazing what people make and try and sell isn't it?

I just "copied" one out of galvanized pipe I bought from the hardware store. Painted it fresh glossy black all around. I'll post a pic once the paint dries. I'm also looking into making a better plate from which I can place the camera more securely. Not a bad idead IMHO.

I find it very interesting that the maker of this device feels it necessary to point out how illegal it is to duplicate and sell his design, while using the names "Steadicam®", "Fig Rig", and "GlideCam®" in his advertising! I'm guessing that he probably doesn't have the rights to use those names.

My first thought when I looked at this was that it looks like it would cause lots of strain on the forearms and biceps when holding it FigRig style. In fact, I have the same reaction to the FIgRig. I'm probably wrong but it looks like a nice-size cam would be heavy on that thing! I have a DVC60 (5.7 lbs) and I imagine it would be heavy even on the FIgRig. Thoughts about this?

It's true. I've never shot with one, but I have tried it out in the store. The rig itself is very, very light, but once you throw a camera on there, it does get heavy. I tried just to hold it out in front of me for a while and got pretty tired. But I'm sure there is a technique to it. I know people who love it.

Well having worked for a number of inventors I can say that this has about a 0% of getting a patent. As a side note only 10% of US issued patents withstand a challenge. But "prior art" ie anything similar will kill you and the rigs he mentions are prior art so....
Copyright does not apply to "things" so only his name would be protected with a copyright. So he has no protection except that he is not charging much and if you don't want to make one it's reasonably priced.
By the way I'm pretty certain that his is made out of PVC pipe bot steel pipe. That would be much easier to cary around. You could go with 3/4" schedule 80 (thicker gray pipe) and glue on some pipe insulation and have a nice little rig for about $20. And have a bunch of left overs to play with.

Yes it is, I made a macho glide to see how it would fair against the $14 steadycam. I'm begining to like the $14 one over he macho!

My MachoGlide

My MachoGlide

Hey guys,

I understand your comments in regards to my rig the "MachoGlide." To be honest I laughed at the fact when I made this thing myself too. Yes it is made from Home Depot, yes it is inexpensive to put it together. Can you put it together yourself? Sure you can, go right ahead. :o) But we all know that there are people out there that do not have the time or the patience to do that, thats why I sell it. Who cares it's a buck.

And for the cost, how can you ***** ya know? I know it looks silly, but don't down it unless you have felt it in your own hands. Hurting your back? Be in a lil shape and stand with good posture, it won't hurt your back. Strain on your arms? So does every other steadycam, from the Glidecam all the way down to the 14 dollar, I have felt the strain. Get a strap, it helps.

I am by no means here to disrespect anybody. As an artist/filmmaker, you have to be a jack of all trades to pursue the industry. The macho is just one of my tests, I have other things in the works to be an entrepreneur on eBay and the internet in general while I pursue my goal. And it's not more rigs. No machopods coming out.

It's a great way to do it actually, still gives me the time to write, direct, and produce my own indies while I make a decent income on ebay. A fulltime job is not for me. HA! Passive income is. I just thought outside the box a bit, thats all.

I have sold about a 1000 of these silly rigs, who knew? And I have only gotten great responses.

Peace guys,
