New Special Offer for HMC150

Comments like this produce what?

The USD has fallen significantly against the yen this year and the last part of last year.

My guess is that we will see other price increases as well.

Remember, no body is obligated to buy this product.

Shame on Panasonic.

Not for reducing the amount for the rebate, or even if they didn't provide a rebate. Shame on them for claiming the 16GB SD is over $230 in value. So are they saying their $3000 HMC is worth less than 13 16GB SDHC cards?

LOL 16GB = $230 value? Shame on Panasonic for over inflating this crap.

THANK you, this is the real point. Sure the card has an MSRP, just like everything...but in the "real world" you aren't going to pay over $100 for that thing. Do you think Panasonic has any reasonable expectation that the average buyer would otherwise pay $230 for that?

It's all fine and good, they know what they're doing when they put "$230" up there on the marketing, and that's their choice. But I still think that almost anyone else would rather have an extra battery (a "$210" value, which runs $170 at most places) and an 8 GB SDHC than a 16 GB card - if given the choice.

No biggie - people who want the HMC150 will still buy it, will still get a great camera and still never have enough for all the accessories they want. Just no denying that the card isn't worth $230, that's all.

Totally agree. I honestly think the reason why they have Panny branded SD memory is to use them for marketing such as these rebate offers we're seeing... Slap a high MSRP on them so when we give them out as rebate, it will look good on paper. I doubt they've sold even more than a handful at $230 a pop... But obviously, rebate or no rebate, it wouldn't have affected my decision to go with the HMC.

I agree...we've had alot of customers who have placed orders for the camcorder complain about the lack of a battery in the promotio...I think Panasonic shiould have kept a battery as part of the promotion...

Panasonic does claim that their card can withstand 2x as much pressure if stepped on and can also be twisted without breaking more than other 3rd party cards...would that help convince anyone to go panasonic for the cards? They usually sell for $89 now a days

Yeah, actually, knowing that would encourage me to choose Panasonic, even for $89 a pop. I'd like to see a video demonstrating that, though...kind of like you used to see people throwing the P2 cards around then recording a video on the HVX.

Twice the pressure if stepped on? That could easily be marketing hype as well. Stepped on by who exactly? Are we talking cat on carpet or John Goodman on woodfloor?

Well, not to be a Panny fanboy, but indeed the Panny cards have a much sturdier feel than do other cards; this is especially apparent to me in the operation of the write-protect switch. Worth the extra money? Most of my cards are Transcend... but if the price difference weren't so big, I'd pay a little extra for the Pannys.

They also have those nifty cases!

Panasonic is a very big company; the Prosumer cameras are a small part of it; I don't think any of us can know exactly what Panny's motivation is to release their own cards. But I can guess that Panasonic - and many of their customers - are glad to have a media option that's guaranteed to work well with their cameras. With many companies releasing cards, with name brand suppliers sometimes sourcing cards from different suppliers at different times, with different levels and standards of performance for SDHC cards, it is in many situations worthwhile to have a card that's approved and backed by the manufacturer. Often, in a competitive world, the only way a manufacturer can do that is to market their own brand of cards. You may think, "well, they can just certify third party cards"... but Panasonic has no control over any changes that might take place in the manufacturing of those third party cards over time... which is these days a significant issue.
