FS7: New Sony PXW-FX9 with venice features and 6k full frame

Yes, the C200 face tracking feat is an
Absolute joke. Really completely unusable in
Most situations. Object tracking works well enough. In general, the auto focus features on the C200 do fall short of where most think they will succeed.

Interesting, I was super-impressed by this (best watched at 0.5x speed):

In stills I went AF in 1996*. Even now one has to 'know' AF - for example it may fail in big backlight, is usually useless with a 70 full length etc (200 has no problem as the bg is so far OOF) - one learns how to use AF and may twist ones shooting style to match and/or know when to go to MF. It is still super useful though!

*in 1996 'real' stills photographers didnt use it.

(1) Not an ideal test.
(2) Even so...it's 50p (at least according to YT), which could make a difference as AF is easier with higher framerates.

___

I've used the C200 many times and it would just throw a fit; did not want to track well-lit faces in basic environments.

This reminds me of the early 90’s when SLR’s were touting faster auto focus.

We need Agassi to come back and do some tennis moves to show off the auto foucs of the Canon C series.

Interesting, it's clearly losing focus when she turns around, however if she's looking forward and her eyes leave frame the af stays locked where it was.
Would like to see this under softer lighting with a variety of skin tones and eye colors.

I've been out of the loop for a bit on the FX9, have there been any updates or examples of the RAW video capabilities of the camera? I know the FS7 famously had issues with its RAW video output so I was hoping the FX9 corrected those issues.

Raw won’t be available until a firmware update after the camera is released. Summer is the word so far as of the time frame of that update. It’s 16bit raw compared to the 12bit of the FS7. So most likely it will be way way better. But don’t expect any examples anytime soon.

Works up to 60fps.

I was playing around with the FX9 yesterday and I think I tested AF in 2K S35 HFR as well and it worked. There is a slight chance I'm misremembering though and I only tested it in 4K S35 60fps but I was talking to someone at NAB NY about how some cameras dont do AF in high HFR and we should test it so I'm pretty sure it was 120fps I tested it in...

Just now remembering I totally forgot to test the AF with a subject wearing glasses or dark skin, someone should definitely test those since those are the things I've seen Sony AF struggle with in the past. It seemed very good from what I tested though, and had good options for sensitivity and speed.

Alister showed this footage yesterday at a Sony event, it made me want to but the Canon C500 mkII.

Why?

Looking just at the image quality, the downsampled 4k does seem like a noticeable step up from the 4k-for-4k of the FS7.

Did you happen to test to see if the red REC light in the VF remains when you turn off the display?

Did you find the resolution on the lcd display noticeably better?
