New Sony HDV camera.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Yes sir,

...a 3 CCD native 16/9, 24p (already possible for Panasonic), HD, on a 50 mbps DVCPro 50 tape (and speed). Very same camera size and features.

...and Panasonic would sell tons and tons of these cameras to professionals and prosumers.

...and a low priced very basic dvcpro 50 deck with no features (just read and record in high quality with fire wire).

Go Panasonic !

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

If Jarred had posted a 24p HDV DVX200 as an April Fool joke, I might have bought it.

You believe it because you WANT to believe it . . .

;)

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Are you saying the DVX200 I bought from Bangladesh through ebay is a fake???

crap....This is the second time!!! :(

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Just a few observations:
HiDef is coming, make no mistake about it. In this country all programs are broadcast in SD DVB and a mandated amount of HD DVB is also broadcast. What the consummer really makes of it is one thing, how much of it they buy is what counts and as we saw with DVD, once it reaches a critical mass, everyone wants it. HiDef tuner cards are only a few 100 dollars so the revolution may well start from people watching it on PCs (and no doubt pirating it as well).
The posts about content are absolutely spot on, people watch film / video to be entertained, they don't give a rats about what it was shot on or how it was done, in general they want a STORY that takes them somewhere else for while.
HiDef in general looks a bit flatter color wise tha SD. Don't have an explaination for why.
There's no reason why HD cannot be shot at 24p and pull down applied to 60i, same as in SD, after all the same thing happens in a HD telecine as an SD one so a camera could be built to do the same trick natively same as DVX100.
All else being equal HiDef is a whole new ball game compared to SD, much the same as shooting 24p is very different to shooting 50/60i. A whole new set of issues come to the fore. SD hides a million sins, makeup, set construction, lighting and audio all have to match the increase in image quality. And then there's the issue of editing HiDef.
I'm not 100% certain of this but as i understand it the HiDef spec calls for 12 bit res, these prosummer HD cameras are only 8 bit i.e. no better in that respect than DV25, might explain the poor looking color.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

I *love* HDTV here in ATSC land . . . however, I *hate* that the federal government MANDATED it instead of allowing the market to get there on its own.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

The odds of Panny making a 16x9 HD 3 chip cam with 50 meg output rate for 5 or 6k are

ZERO!

They are charging 25k now for a 16x9 SD 3 chip cam with 50 meg output rate - the sdx900.

That's where the killer cam will be. they'll swap out the sd chips with hd and still charge - 25k.

Ah, but they didn't. The FCC mandated a switch to DIGITAL broadcasting, but not to high-definition broadcasting. A station could choose to broadcast standard-def video digitally, and be in complete compliance. It remains to be seen how many will broadcast HD. Looks like the major networks probably all will, but there are tons of low-power UHF stations, etc., who may never switch over.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

I know, Barry; it was sloppy writing on my part . . . but the principle is the same. The market should get there on its own.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

4:2:0 sampling / MPEG-2
(Bit rate after compression: 19/25 Mbps)
Audio 48kHz (384 kbps after compression)

Prototype Camcorder:
Has multi-mode down-conversion:

Depending on format chosen, available as different outputs from camera (inc. iLink).
1080i
3 x HD CCD (1/3")
16:9 LCD & Viewfinder
SD/HD switchable: 4:3 SD/'Precision'* 16:9 SD & HD/ 'Best quality 16:9 SD'

Also offering separate HD-SDI converter to integrate into HDCAM workflow.

Available:
Spring 2005. About 30% more than PD170 (which will continue to be made).
Sony announcing Pro Version at NAB, consumer version @ CeBit.
Consumer version likely to be out this year.

Hope that all makes sense!

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

ok then.. dear Panasonic engineers, you have one year...
DVX200 by spring 2005  ;D

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Considering the progressive modes on this thing, I'd say you might be right, Shai . . .

(Not that I'm giving up The Twins any time soon . . . !)

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Actually Sony HDV will be out latter this year.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

@Max Kup aka Scott ... is this "officiall" information?!
Nevertheless I'd be fine with the cam if only the video it records looks better than the crap (yes sorry I was there with 2 fellow videographers and they both agreed) video quality that they've shown @ CeBIT...

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Those are some serious specs.. :o 1280 by 720 60p?? That's nfl video, man....even a nice clean 1280 by 720 25p will be good enough to use for independent features, methinks....SD Video, even at 24p, is still not quuuuiite good enough...

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

I don't believe it will record 60 progressive frames a second at 1280x720... that stuffed into max 25mbps would look like sh*t! ;-)
And here in PAL land going from 720x576 to 1280x720 only doubles the pixel count. Of course it's a lot more resolution... but it's not like stepping up from CD-ROM to DVD... ;-P

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Well, actually, the HDV spec calls for 1280x720x60P to be recorded in 19 megabits, not 25.

The only frames that get recorded at 25mbps are 1080/50i and 1080/60i.
