New Sony HDV camera.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Really 60 whole progressive frames?! In 19mbps??! You're joking right? Wow this is gonna get ugly...
(I've seen offline aka non-realtime encoded 720p movies @ 20mbps with "only" 25 progressive frames a sec and there was some visible artefacting and esp. block noise at more action filled scenes)

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

It's really a function of how good the encoders are. MPEG4 would seem a more sensible way to encode but I don't think you're going to see a camera that records mpeg4 any time soon.
Anyway the pending release of this and other similar cameras is not going to cause me to hold off buying a DVX100A. The camera is only a very small part of the equation. Finding a decent way to edit what it records is a much bigger issue. Finding a way to record HiDef to something affordable is another and then there's still the question of just how good the images these types of cameras can capture under less than optimal conditions. The Sony effort looks like it should be a big step up from the GR-HD10 but it'd dman well want to be.
Even so it's got a long way to go before it's serious competition to the big boys toys.
I also don't quite see how it's such a big thing for indie filem makers, I assume everyones talking about printing to film? Just how many can afford just the transfer costs? That alone is greater than the budgets of many indie efforts.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

personally i would rather buy some nice new, and much cheaper uprezzing software, than a new camera. i dont care if its still not quite as sharp. its already acceptable enough on the big screen , and with a nice uprez on the final film from somthing like s-spline pro(barry! any news on the video version?) it should look pretty darn good to the point where nobody cares.   i mean if they lowered the price of the varicam, or cinealta with the serious equipment needed for filmmaking, and high quality images to he same price, then id bite, but trying to copy a rembrandt with some crayons just doesnt cut it for me. if the thing does a good job(and isnt crayons) than mo powaz to it, but the odds are stacked against it , and id still just get some software which i plan on gettng anyway. (ive even been speaking with a programmer freind of mine who owns a videogame company to write some software to intelligently uprez video. and hes all about speed in proccessing, so well see where that goes).

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

actually i just checked the s-spline site ..the name has changed to "shortcut photozoom pro" , and it says it does digital video now. i havent tried it yet, but i will try it tonight. will be pretty cool if it can do the video now ..id be a happy man for only 129.00 :)

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

..nope. doesn't do video. i wonder why they say that. ? oh well perhaps they are still working on it. i did try the method that barry was talking about using batch proccessing, after exporting an uncompressed image sequence from AE. then i imported the new image sequence back into AE, and exported an avi. that works well, but its still sort of a pain. i suppose if your only going to do it once on your final output. its still worth it. the program does a phenominal resizing job. i converted some material to HD like barrys, and it looks outstanding. i think we all need to get on their site, and send them letters about making it proccess video directly. although even if it did process video directly, i would still want it to do the upconversion from an original file that was uncompressed. so i would have to export an uncompressed vid anyway, which is the same as exporting an uncompressed image sequence, and the batch processing in photozoom is pretty much the same as it doing one video file anyway, and then importing the new image sequence is the same as doing one file in AE so it wouldnt be much different anyway.. just simpler.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

iamloser i'm still on my project of a premiere/AE/dfusion plugin for exactly this :) .. but because of many recent projects didn't have to time to finish up a beta ver... but i'll let you know if i've got something to test

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

k, thank you! i did ask shortcut software , and they sent me a mail confirming that they are still working on a specific video version of the software for video uprezzing as well. they said they couldnt really estimate a time cause they have a few programs in the works right now at once.
