New Sony HDV camera.

That sound you just heard was the sound of thousands of JVC HD1's and HD10's being thrown in the trash.

Looks like Sony's introducing a new HDV camera at CeBit.  If the picture can be believed, it looks like it's a 3CCD, with 1440x1080i resolution, manual & servo zoom, buttons for everything (instead of hidden in menus)... looks like they learned from the DVX.

Looks an awful lot like a PD170 with HDV chips stuffed in it.  Could be a major winner.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Thanks Barry. Great News! A lot of people have been waiting for this for a long time...

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Well, it IS 16x9, just a bit confusing. The CineAlta is the same way: it shoots 1920 x 1080, but records it to tape as 1440 x 1080.

HDV uses 1440 x 1080 on tape, but it gets up-rezzed to 1920 x 1080 on output to a television.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Question : what will happen with this wonderful family — the DVXuser fellowship — if this Sony camera becomes the major hit everyone seems to be waiting for ?
Will we all be moving onto an HDuser.com site ? With the same spirit ?
What's made me happy with my DVX is of course its incredible cinematic qualities, but also the philosophy hidden in it (the subtext ?) that seems to gather all of us together.
The DVX100 triggers a lot of passion and that's what I love about it — a bit like Macintosh of the early days...

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Oh! It's so pretty ;D. What is the flip up(out) on the handle for??? Solid state light maybe? 12x optics to see with, but can somebody say "Where's my 24P"

All kidding aside, looks like good 'ol Sony is getting back in the prosumer game with some pretty nice HD muscle. I believe I can see just about every button for button on the DVX and even a very smart IRIS knob.

Gonna be fun at NAB I'll bet.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Speculation is that the flipping thing on top is the LCD panel. Looks like it has a 12:1 manual zoom, with true manual markings on the lens just like the DVX. Even starts at 4.5mm!

Everything on the press release says "prototype". Panasonic introduced the DVX at NAB 2002, but it was a mockup kept under a clear glass box that nobody could touch. Will this be the same? Who knows, we'll find out soon.

Definitely no 24P, but maybe everything else is there. No clue as to how expensive it'll be either. Or when it may be released -- Panasonic announced the DVX in April but didn't deliver 'til October, so the Sony may be available soon or maybe not even this year.

Perhaps some of our European friends will be able to get into cebit and give us the scoop!

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

My son just came in a bit ago and I showed it to him.  He said looks like a cross between the DVX and PD, lot of buttons and 3CCD HD... "BUT will it shoot film like".

Big question in my mind as well.  I would love to have HD def but not if I have to give up "film like".  That's just asking too much >:(  I guess if it's following HDV standards 24p is out, huh?

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

I just bought my DVX100A last week. So, I'm sure that's what triggered this release from Sony.

Ya know... Murphy's Law and all...

Am I upset or bothered? No.

If I like it, I will sell my PD150 and pony up the rest to get one. But, I plan on keeping my DVX100A for the unique look(s) it can provide.

I'm sure when NAB is over there will be several cameras I will want.

>:(

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Again, they said they're going to be showing a "prototype". I would speculate that it'll probably be a year before it's out. And even then, what will the quality be like? If it's not a dramatic step up from the JVC, then no thanks.

I suspect Sony might get it right this time, and deliver the HDV equivalent of what the VX1000 represented back in '96. My guess is $5000-$5500. But time will tell...

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Actually, since they say they're embracing the 1080i format, perhaps it won't have progressive at all... or maybe it'll be both.

Should know more tomorrow!

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

"Rosemary Flynn, spokeswoman for Sony Consumer Camcorders responded to questions about the European announcement and the possibility of a US introduction saying "Sony U.S. has no information with regards to the introduction of an HDV camcorder into the US," she continued to say "This is a tentative mockup and the design is not yet decided."

Hmmm, is it a mockup (non-working) or a prototype? In any case it will be awhile before these things are actually sold. I don't think there's anything in the short-term that will challenge the DVX. There are also still a lot of question marks surrounding the HDV format as well.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Should probally be a good camera. Ill bet my pony the XL2 is gonna use the same format,
when it comes out.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

OK, technical question. If a NLE app such as Vegas 4 can edit in HD and convert to 24p why is shooting 24p in camera with the DVX so much *better*? Is it in the gamma settings of the DVX or in the way it encodes 24p and 24p advanced internally, or something else?

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

converting 60i to 24p with adding the "effect" of 24p motion takes about a week per 60 minute tape just to reneder.. and its not perfect.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

Thanks Jarred.

I was going to attempt to explain the Interlaced/Progressive/Film Rate and...

Well then my brain got a cramp and I decided it was best I need not know the ExACT reason. It's like the air we breathe. I know that it is good and I'll leave it that.

Re: New Sony HDV camera.

If i'm not mistaken, doesn't converting 60i to 24p also lose half the resolution as the footage must be deinterlaced as well? That was my biggest complaint about Pre dvx footage. I had converted most of my stuff to 24p but got really soft results, unless there is a better way of doing it, say with Boris effects?
