NEW: Sony HandyCam NXCAM with E-Mount

The Sony is probably going to be a body only with everything else sold separate. I can't wait to see those mystery pics.

I think many will already have a lot of gear form there Dslr days like me. In fact if I could get just like a brain with sd card output for the avchd and hdsdi/hdmi 10 bit 422 output and 1 xlr input at a very competitive price I would be very glad. If you have other modules to enhance it afterward I would not say no. From the crewtv article it seems that it is already very different from the first mock-up.

If Sony builts a PL to E mount with supports... id buy that
then get an e mount to m4/3 adapter :D

EDIT
oh wait sony has lower flange distance.. dammit.

Some sample footage from Sony´s new camera:

Hopefully i don't get blasted for this, but I don't see anything spectacular out of this video. Seems like the blowouts resemble very much the way the AF100 handles highlights ( in certain gamma modes ) and overall I feel like this coudl have been shot with the af100 with very similar quality, without going further into the video before the online compression.

I'm still very glad I have the AF100, this just kind of helps confirm that.

This seems to be shot early in the day, where DR/highlights aren't such an issue.... there are examples showing the F3 as being far superior... close to RED MX.... Alexa even. Not to say the AF100 is bad, just that the F3 is better, as it should be.

If the NX version is anything close, then it will be something very special.

I totally agree. All of my camera ponderings are biding my time until this is released , not that I wouldn´t like a af100 but a sensor made esp. for hd cinema has so much potential and maybe pany is watching for the af300. The battle between sony and pany is great for us so I hope they keep nuking it out .

and reading the link and looking carefully at the photos , there are a few things I notice - one the nex mount looks like it can be unscrewed - maybe they´re thinking about also having interchangable mounts- two , the holes on top look like they could mount an evf that might also use the hotshoe , and exactly what is that on the side of the lens mount ?

That is an odd looking camera.

I think I'm going to get one, put it on an old set of wooden sticks and find one of those hand held exploding flash arrangements like the box camera guys used back in the late 1800's.

(it's either that or helmet mount for me!).

Well at 2:03 in the darker areas on the pier on the right side there is no noise. On every AF-100 clip I saw so far (that didn´t have crushed blacks), it had noise in such an area. Not too much on some, and terrible on others. Still, the AF-100 certainly is not a clean cam pe se.

I know people here say it is my monitoring, but it´s weird my monitor doesn´t show noise on SONY clips.....

There are some other vids on Vimeo that are very, very, good especially the ones with the nanoflash that I think show the F3 in a strong light. I think there is a difference in finer detail and colour rendition on the F3 but my word do you pay for the slight improvement. Almost three times as dear as an AF100.

I wonder how an AF100 shot with a low contrast setting and then given a LUT that pushed it in the direction of the sony colours would fair. We haven't seen a high bit rate nano/cinedeck type shoot correctly graded have we? That would be revealing. I am still not sure what to buy just yet. But no doubt the AF100 gives bang for buck

If this NXcam comes with the strongly rumored specification (f3 sensor, 10 bit hdsdi) at $ 6000 as was shown in the last trade show. The the Af-100 won't look that much of deal.

The F3 delivers (reportedly) around 2/2.5 stops more DR than the AF100... that alone is well worth the price tag for alot of people.

The only thing holding me back right now is that I don't need to shoot until June and may as well wait for news of the NX and other NAB news..

There is that video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5la6uOumhM , which gives a good idea of the dynamic range of the F3. I think that it the type of camera more geared towards the shadows than highlights. That is you can dig a lot in the shadows for dynamic range. So as in the example in the pool (even if I don't see it having a lot of blown highlights) the shooter could have exposed a little lower to protect the highlights in some cases and then boost the mid-tones in post.

the F3 shouldnt have more noise. its a higher end camera.

af100 isnt clean. no cam is. but its noise is acceptable for its price.

Api69, it's not monitoring...well not totally. It's Matrix and Gamma settings in camera that cause the noise you are talking about. Specifically Cine-D w/Cine Matrix. I shoot dark areas all the time with very little noise.

I believe NAB is where Sony will officially announce the camera with specs and every detail we need to know. Delivery as you stated will take place in June.

I'm liking the little screen, that appears will ship as a consumer product, hence hopefully reasonable price. 800x480 should be enough for a 5" screen. Also standard shoe and hdmi in so nothing propriety, that's new for sony. I'll be swinging by the local sony store in march to find out more.
