FS5: New Sony FS5 footage

^ 100% with this, I know everyone says external recording deck is no big deal and "odyssey is more of a monitor that you'll need anyway so recording no big deal" but when it comes down to it are you really going to mount a 7" ext. screen and use the FS5 handheld to get RAW out of it?

Ask those who shot the F3 with external deck just to get 10-bit 422 about it. Sure it worked, but there were times where it didn't and plenty of horror stories out there if you poke around.

The F5 is the best deal, best price with the best features and I think there is probably still 0% financing through Sony on it. It's a robust camera. The FS5 is marketed to the people who want the Ferrari but want to pay Vespa scooter price.

And to add to what Dennis has said. If your really thinking about buying a FS5 or an FS7, you would be far happier if you saved a while longer and put that money in to a PMW-F5. No messing about with the F5, it's only limited by no LUTs in S&Q motion but everything else is solid gold. All these other Sony cams are crippled in some way, remember you get what you pay for.

Why pay for F5 when FS7 will earn you back the exact amount of money?

I think that twice the price is a little bit too much as a comfort premium charge, but thats just me.

You forget about the weight. The savings is huge! Especially if you can make do with Sony FE lenses instead of heavy canons with heavy adapter.

Imagine hiking to this place with all the gear in your pack. Which camera do you bear to carry?

It's an amazing camera, don't get me wrong. I am actually getting one in the new year because believe it or not my F55 gets turned down for gigs that are more suited to Canon 5D markIII etc.. but just don't expect FS7/F5 features from it. I'm sure 99% of the people looking at the FS5 aren't for a second thinking they are getting a FS7/F5 for half the price. :)

Yeah, the features / colors from my FS7 is the reason i dont regret buying one, just few weeks before the FS5 with its low weight was announced.

But id love to have a FS5 for the backpack too. Time will tell if i get one.

I would sincerely hope that no FS5 buyer has expectations of FS7 or F5. Just like FS7 buyers should expect that they (we) are getting many but hardly all of the features of the F5. When I think FS5 I think Canon C100 and it is in those terms that the FS5 should be understood. Likewise, F5 needs to be considered against C300 Mk II. As far as the Adorama footage, hard to tell whether the artifacting is web compression or camera itself. I'll have to do some investigating to find out how they shot it.

And the worst thing about the FS5 is it has no CineEI and no 10bit 4K XAVC which is a big deal for me. If the FS5 was really designed to be used as a Bcam for the FS7 then why leave these two important features out?

It's more than twice the price, but when you have used one you will know why your paying more. I won't go in to details but 16bit RAW, HDCAM SR and a proper EVF come to mind. The F5/55 build quality is great and it doesn't look and feel like a toy. No external recorders needed with the F5/55. If you want a camera that is going to last you years I do feel that the F5/55 is a far better investment with loads of upgrades and options available.

I agree the FS5 is great for hikes etc, but then again you could use anything from the A6000 up to A7S/R models. I have a FS700 for this purpose but it doesn't compare to my F5 at all.

But then its those damned colors again! :-)

And the built in NDs, and the built in sound recorder, and the whole "videocamera" fact. I own an A7 too and its no match for the FS7.

But for my part, and many others, a F5 wont pay itself back even though you own it for years to come. There just isnt the market for the upsell in our client base. Heck, even the FS7 is a little stretch because i live so rural.

Martin I don't know why you can't just use your FS7 for hikes etc, it only weighs 2kg. Add on a NEX lens like the 20mm pancake and you have a lightweight camera package.

Nothing wrong with the FS7 really, it's if you ever want to go to the next level and use RAW but the 4K XAVC is damn good anyway.

As an FS7 shooter, I would say that 0% of my work so far has warranted recording in raw. 10-bit 4:2:2 S-log 3 is a huge amount of data. Unless you're greenscreening for theatrical release, it's hard to imagine a real demand for raw in 2015. Maybe in a few years when 4K distribution is the standard.
I've had more of my clients ask for the 50Mbps mpeg or 1080p ProRes options than raw, so far. I don't expect that to change, soon.

it is heavier. I stripped it down as much as possible for the Ronin: handle, viewfinder, mic off. Just the naked body with a SEL 35.18 (155g) and a Swit S-8U93 battery (400g) is 2.450kg. With the viewfinder, the handgrip and a heavier lens ist will be about 3.5kgs. With that weight you need a solid tripod too..

My mistake. I think I could handle 3.5kg but it's heavier than I thought. My F5 with a PL lens weighs over 7kg and I can carry it on hikes but it is awkward and uncomfortable. So I bought the FS700 and with my add-ons it weighs under 3kg and it makes a big difference.

How is the Ronin with the FS7? Does it work well or is it a waste of money? I would love to get a stabilizer but they all look like way too much hassle. Cheers

The Ronin by itself works great but I have no experience with other gimbals.
It's all about practice and with the weight of 4.2kg of the Ronin itself and the payload you quickly end up at
8-10kgs depending what gear you put on the rig. I prefer having it light and I use auto focus on the SEL lenses
Real cinematographers will probably ignore me like a sh*t ;-) but my results are better than manual focus

Sony F-Series issue:
the camera build too long and therefore you have to use light lenses (AF ha ha) or add weight at the back
or add the extension arms. Also sooner or later you will consider a support system like EasyRig or Atlas

I recently purchased Atlas but I need more practice still.

I'm a Sony fan but that does not mean Sony won't burn you.

It happens on nearly every model camera sold in the last 3-6 years so my advice is not to buy the FS5 on paper specs or counting on future enhancements or capabilities.

Case and point you might want to read this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...etween-12-bit-RAW-16-bit-RAW-amp-10-bit-S-Log The short version is that it might be that the 12-bit RAW can't really handle the total dynamic range of the FS7 or FS5…

And having said that, I would check out this thread too now:

Well i do intend to bring it on hikes. But my FS7 with my lens and vw mic and handle adds up to well over 4.5kg. In addition to that i need around 20-30 kg of winter camping equipment for safely spending the night outdoors. Add spare batteries, rain cover, tripod, lens cleaning utils etc. and we are suddenly talking 40kg easily for winter shoots in the wild.

A smaller camera would allow smaller tripod, smaller rain cover, etc. and ofcourse one could negate some on the weight for the sleeping bag and tent as well.

But the FS7 do have features i dont want to miss. Like proper 4K. Shooting damn beautiful landscapes in just HD in this day and age feels stupid.

Thanks for this. I did a little research on the Ronin and it's too much hassle for me. I think a Glidecam is a better investment but I do prefer the look of a Ronin. Perhaps the next generation will be better.
