FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

I was referencing a common misconception that everything shot on Epic looked the same and/or had poor skintones.

Ah I see, a generalization, because I hadn't said anything about Skintones personally. It's also not looking the same, it's having a pretty consistent "feeling" to those projects. They all have them, even if it looks really good/appropriate for the content. AT the same time, not everyone can detect that so it's kind of a useless point to debate.

My bad for derailing.

Well it was probably more my mind going off at tangents :)

In a way for me coming from a red world for a long time it's nice and reassuring to hear there is just as much similar talk about the look of the Sonys as there ever was about the MX sensor cameras - when the reality was that I could always get what I needed from them.

I played around with 2 of the clips posted by Babu (thanks for the footage!)

As shot on top, corrected on the bottom.

I'm not a colorist by any means, so please make no harsh judgments about the camera based upon my initial efforts with LUTs. I wasn't trying to match the shots, just seeing where I could go with a basic correction. But I thought it might be of some interest, so - anyhow. The images are a bit grainy due to JPG compression - was trying to keep pic filesize down. Hope it's of value in some way. :)

You're very welcome! Hoping actual footage helps people here. Tried giving a bit of a selection with 1080 and 4K selections. Interesting choice on grade as well. I haven't been able to play with the footage I shot so it's fun to see what others do with it before I even touch everything from that shoot.

Nice examples Thorn, what LUTs did you use on the SLOG footage?

Thanks :)

Everything was done directly in Premiere CC. I used a Lumetri effect: F3 slog to Rec709 LUT (filename: slog2sg_to_rec709_STARCentral.001.cube) for both clips. You can download 2 variations of the LUT here.

I also threw in a Fast Color Corrector for a slight bit of white balance and midrange tweaks.

One thing I noticed was that these 2 clips had a different white balance (or ISO, or something) - you'll see the "source" doesn't match in overall value to begin with. So I felt a little like I was shooting in the dark for getting a final... I'm not sure which one would be closer to what the model's skin tone actually looks like. The first clip is a edging a little too blue on her skin, and the second may be too orange - but again, I barely know what I'm doing.

While I've done Premiere and AfterEffects for several years - I've almost no experience with proper grading. I've always dealt with "baked" footage, and never gone beyond standard things like adjusting levels, curves, that sort of thing. So, it's quite possible I've done something that a pro would properly school me on... like using a F3 slog2 LUT on slog3 footage... but, I just clicked around until it looked like a decent test result. ;)

Very excited about this camera... waiting for some solid answers to come in on some bids we've done before I drop $10K, but where the Pana GH-series always felt like a compromise of sorts (for me), the FS7 checks every box I think I had for the past few years.

Ok - 2 more (last ones. I promise I'm not going to post these all nite) ;) . Same frames, same LUTs and effects... but this time I did what I should have done the first time, and used the scopes. Quite a bit of dynamic latitude to play with...

The second ones look better than the first for sure, but still look pretty magenta to me. I would not buy the camera based on these shots... hopefully something good comes out soon.

Yes, what I have been saying for a long time. The scopes are your best friend. Much better than the first in my opinion.
The first one looks close to correct in terms of contrast. Looks like you did a secondary on the face, but forgot the hands though. :-)
The second image would need to have the blacks balanced out like the first (more blue and a touch less red in your blacks - look at the bottom of your waveform for both shots) and the highlights can still be pulled up more. Overall there is the material there to do this though, so I think all is good.

Overall, the shot feels a little soft, so difficult as a sale for the camera, but honestly I think these days that all these cameras are so close and in the same ballpark, that functionality and pricepoint take over as the determining factor.

Appreciate the footage!

Has anyone with the FS7 cracked the case of using the LUT for VF monitoring only and not having it baked in?

And have they actually taken the footage off the cards via computer to verify if the image is pure slog3, or in fact has LUT baked in?

Nope. I'm in the middles of battle testing this camera in a very demanding shoot across the US. I'm shooting Cine EI with different frame rates in 4k and 1080. I'm sticking to 2000ISO and using the waveform for exposure and checking noise by punching in. Not a great technique, and I'm not completely sure if it's the best, but so far so good.

I hope they get the Lut thing sorted. I would love to see viewing Luts in Custom mode and to see NR in Cine EI. Of course the viewing luts baking in bug but that seems like an easy firmware fix.

The middle of November is going to seem like forever but hopefully the bugs get sorted before I get my cam. Thanks for putting the camera through its paces so early on. I can't wait to hear how your experiences have been.

After thinking about the lack of color control in CINE EI, I've decided I'm just going to bite the bullet and buy a few warming and cooling filters ( maybe a CC05 or CC10 magenta as well) and have them on hand to adjust the looks I want.

My lenses are all mostly 77 or 82 mm so i figure I'll just go 82mm and get a few adapters to adjust. Its only a few hundred bucks and well worth it to have the advantage of shooting Slog3 and still getting the look I want - especially if I want to bake-in with 709 Type A or 709 800%.

Anyone else try this or thinking of it?

BTW - Thanks so much to all you early testers for figuring out the kinks before the rest of us enter the fray.

in log/cine EI surely you don't need to filter as those modes are designed to be worked in post and used with codecs strong enough to not break when corrected?

if you want a look in camera use a different mode?
